The document discusses the human senses of smell and taste. It contains information about: 1. Smell receptors being located in the nasal cavity and covered with mucus. 2. Taste receptors being located in taste buds on the tongue and each receptor responding to a specific taste like sweet, sour, salty, or bitter. 3. The senses of taste and smell working together, with some chemicals stimulating taste receptors through saliva and others traveling to the nose to stimulate smell receptors.

Chapter One: Our Senses 1. Smell receptors or named as sensory cells are covered with mucus and found at the roof of the nasal cavity.

Lets Test Yourself 1.4 1. a) Our sense of taste depends on receptors that are stimulated by __________ __________ b) A __________ __________ contains many taste receptors. Each taste receptor is __________ to a certain __________ c) When a __________ __________ is stimulated, a nerve __________ is sent to the brain 2. What are the four basic tastes? Identify the tastes that the different parts of the tongue are sensitive to by labelling the following diagram.

2.

Mucus dissolves the chemicals in the air and stimulates the sensory cells. Sensory cells will send a nerve impulse to the brain and interpret.

3.

3.

Lets Test Yourself 1.3 1. We can distinguish between the smell of coffee and the smell of curry. State a reason for this. 2. 3. What is the purpose of hair in the nose? Why are dogs used in tracing drugs?

4.

Tongue surface covered with taste buds and each taste bud contains estimated 50 taste receptors.

5.

Saliva dissolves chemicals in food and stimulates the taste receptors. Senses of taste and smell work together. When we eat food, some of the chemicals are trapped in saliva and stimulate the taste receptors The rest of chemicals travel to the nasal passage and stimulate the smell receptors
