Sample Error Analysis

The document summarizes an error analysis of using a two-slit interference experiment to determine the wavelength of light. It reports that the measured wavelength range of 41-60 nm did not overlap with the actual wavelength range of 600-700 nm for red light. It concludes that either the laser used was not red light, but instead orange light, or there were inaccurate measurements not accounted for in the device errors. The distance measured between interference minima likely contributed the greatest error, and this error could be reduced by increasing the projection distance or averaging multiple minima measurements.

Calculations

Conclusion

Therefore the wavelength of light should be in between 41 nm and !" nm according to our measurements# Since the laser used was a red laser$ its wavelength should have been in between %& nm and '! nm# Since the range given by the results of the e()eriment does not overla) with the actual range of the wavelength of red light$ either the laser was shorter in wavelength *not red$ but rather orange+ or there were inaccurate measurements$ not accounted for by the error of the measuring devices# The measurement that could have contributed the greatest error would have been the distance between minima# The easiest ways to reduce this error would be to increase distance with the slit to where it was being )ro,ected or to measure between more than one minima$ so an average can be ta-en$ which would be easier and have a lower )ercentage error#
