Methods+ Chapter+16

This document discusses the key components of a method section in scientific writing, including how hypotheses are translated into testable questions, how variables are measured and manipulated, and whether the measures adequately reflect the constructs of interest. It notes that method sections provide enough detail for studies to be replicated. Specifically, it outlines that a method section should describe the participants, including inclusion/exclusion criteria, recruitment methods, and demographics, as well as the materials used, including measures, tasks, and apparatus, and the procedure in step-by-step detail.

Scientific Writing

(Method Section)

Ch. 16
Note: We will discuss pieces of Ch. 16 in various parts of the course.

METHOD:
How were hypotheses translated into testable

questions? How exactly were variables measured and/or manipulated? Did the measures adequately reflect the construct of interest? (Note: You may not need to understand every detail. Method sections provide enough detail to allow replication.)

Portions of the method section

Participants
Who are the participants (e.g., inclusion or

exclusion criteria age, required characteristics) How were participants recruited? (Internet, lab, participant pool, incentives, etc.) Demographic characteristics (N, gender, age, etc.)
Materials
Measures (name & citation, description, reliability

and validity, sample items) Other tasks, materials, or apparatus

Procedure Step-by-step description of how the

study was conducted; enough details so that another experimenter could replicate the study
