Graphing Linear Equations

SECTION 4.2
Definitions

 Linear Equations
 An equation that can be written in the form
Ax + By = C, where A and B are not both zero
(A, B, and C are real numbers).
 Solution of an Equation
 An ordered pair (x, y) that makes the equation
true.
 Function Form (aka Slope-Intercept Form)
 A two variable equation where y is by itself on one
side of the equation.
Examples

 Decide whether the ordered pair is a solution

of the equation.
1. x + 5y = 3

a. (-2, 1) b. (4, -1)

Examples

2. 2x + y = 8

a. (2, 2) b. (3, 2)
Examples

3. y - x = 2

a. (-1, 1) b. (6, 8)
Examples

4. y =-8

a. (-8, 0) b. (0, -8)

Examples

 Rewrite the equation in function form.

5. 4x + y = -3
Examples

 Rewrite the equation in function form.

6. x - y = 7
Examples

 Rewrite the equation in function form.

7. 2x + y = 10
Examples

 Rewrite the equation in function form.

8. 5x = y - 2
Examples

 Rewrite the equation in function form.

9. x - 2y = 5
Examples

 Rewrite the equation in function form.

10. 2y - 4x = 8
Examples
