AP Statistics Vocabulary

This document introduces new statistics vocabulary including available data which can be used to answer present questions though originally collected for other purposes, observational studies which observe variables without influencing participants, and experimental studies which deliberately manipulate individuals. It defines individuals as objects described by data, variables as characteristics that can vary across individuals, categorical variables which group individuals, and quantitative variables with numerical values. Finally, it describes distributions as showing the values a variable takes and how frequently.

NEW AP STATISTICS VOCABULARY

1. AVAILABLE DATA-are data that were produced in the past for some other
purpose but that may help answer a present question
2. OBERVATIONAL STUDY-we observe individuals and measure variables of
interest but do not attempt to influence their responses
3. EXPERIMENT STUDY-we deliberately do something to individuals in order to
observe their responses
4. INDIVIDUALS-are the objects described by a set of data. Individuals may be
people, but they may also be animals or things.
5. VARIABLE-is any characteristic of an individual. A variable can take different
values for different individuals.
6. CATEGORIACAL VARIABLE-places an individual into one of several groups or
categories
7. QUANTITATIVE VARIABLE-takes numerical values for which arithmetic
operations such as adding and averaging make sense
8. DISTRIBUTION- of a variable tells us what values the variable takes and how
often it takes these values
