The king found the hermit digging in his garden. The old man greeted him but continued digging. The king told the hermit that he had come to find answers to his three questions. The hermit listened but gave no answer and continued working. The king observed that the hermit was frail and elderly and that the work was very difficult for him. The king offered to take over the digging, and the hermit allowed it.

The king dug for one hour. Then he repeated the question, but the hermit did not answer. He worked again for another hour, and then repeated his questions with the same results. This continued for a few more hours until the sun began to sink low in the sky. Finally the king got discouraged. "I came to you for answers wise man. If you have none, tell me and I will return home."

Just them someone came running up the path. They turned to see a man with his hands pressed to his stomach and blood flowing from between them. He dropped to the ground at the king's feet.

The king and the hermit knelt down and began tending to the man. The king washed and bandaged the man's wounds. The blood continued to flow so he kept changing the bandages. The king also helped the hermit to get fresh water, and to help the man to drink.

Finally, the man slept and did not wake until the next morning. The king too slept Visit and register free at http://kamyabology.com to read winning and success presentations

If you had not bound up his wounds he would have died without making peace with you. Therefore the most important person was that man, and what you did was the most important thing, and the right time was the time when you were doing it."

Moral
"You see, the most important time is always the present moment. It is the only time that is important because it is the only time that we have control over. persons that you meet will give you the meaning of life," the monk replied. The boy went to the town. The first man he met was doing carpentry work. The next man he met was doing sheet metal work. The third man he met was making strings. Disappointed, he sat on the bank of a river. Suddenly, he heard the sweet strains of violin music. Something mysterious touched him. He suddenly got the answer he was looking for and he started dancing.

The carpenter was preparing the wood for the violin. The sheet metal worker was preparing metal for the strings and the strings were meant for the violin. Life has everything; all you need is to be able to connect the dots. You need to work out new combinations. And for that you need creative perception.

You have to change the notion that difficulty is pain. In exercise, there is difficulty but also joy. In sports, there is difficulty but there is joy. In your relationships, when there is difficulty, treat it as joy. Just reprogramme your mind.

In prayer you don't have to do anything; just be available to God's grace. Prayer is a deep readiness to receive God's flow. It is passive alertness. Go deep and you discover your original mind it is deep passiveness. A greedy mind is richer than a Buddha, but rich with desires and greed; so a Buddha is 'poorer' than you are. The Bible says: "Blessed are the poor for theirs is the kingdom of God."

Distance between hearts

A saint asked his disciples, 'Why do we shout in anger? Why do people shout at each other when they are upset?' Disciples thought for a while, one of them said, 'Because we lose our calm, we shout for that.' 'But, why shout when the other person is just next to you?' asked the saint. 'Isn't it possible to speak to him or her with a soft voice? Why do you shout at a person when you're angry?' Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the saint. Finally he explained, 'When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance a lot. To cover that distance they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to shout to hear each other through that great distance.' Then the saint asked, 'What happens when two people fall in love? They don't shout at each other but talk softly, why?

Renunciation or attachment?
There lived a king. He had a minister. The king enquired of the minister if he knew any man of perfect renunciation (sanyasi) . The minister replied casually, " There is one in every street corner, your Majesty". The king was anxious to meet one. He requested his deputy many times to introduce one such sanyasi to him. The minister still did not take take the request seriously. One day the king stood firm and gave an ultimatum "if you do not find me one such man within a week you will cease to be my minister." The minister now realised the seriousness of situation. He searched everywhere for a true sanyasi but found none. On the seventh day he was forced to devise a plan. He chose a young man to put an act of a sanyasi when the king and his retinue would approach him. For pretending to be a sanyasi for a while the minister promised to give the young man a bag of gold.

The man put on ochre robes and all other accessories of a sanyasi. He sat under a wayside tree. The next day, the king called for the minister to fulfill his desire. Thus, the king and his retinue were brought by the minister to the 'sanyasi' sitting in meditation by the roadside. The king , the queen and the prince prostrated to show their respect and take the holy man's blessings. The minister has to also follow the king and prostrate before the sanyasi. The king offered the sanyasi trays of money, clothing, food and all. To each offering the sanyasi bade the king to take it away. He refused to accept anything. The king was wonderstruck at his spirit of renunciation. Throughly satisfied, the king and his retinue took leave of him and returned to the palace. The minister rushed back to the so called sanyasi with the bag of gold. He commended the young man for his outstanding performance. The sanyasi bade the minister to take the bag of gold away. The minister was confused . " The play is over, my friend , you may accept what was promised to you", he appealed.

God. Since this man, whatever be his vile desires, has had the good sense to approach God, He grants him some part of the desired objects (even these very soon pass away, just as the two rupees the first beggar got are spent before nightfall). The other type of devotee prays to the Lord for relief from the sufferings of the world, but is better than the first one, in as much as he is ready to abide by His Will. To him the Lord grants full relief from suffering, and bestows on him much wealth and property. The third type he merely prays to the Lord: "O Lord, Thou art Existence-Absolute, Knowledge-Absolute, Bliss-Absolute, etc., etc." What does he want? Nothing. But the Lord is highly pleased with his spirit of renunciation, of desirelessness and of selfsurrender. Therefore, He makes him eat His own food, I.e., He grants this man Supreme Devotion to Himself. Over and above this, He makes the devotee to live in His own House. This devotee dwells in the Lord's Abode as a Liberated Sage forever.

The True Devotion

One day Narada thought that he was the most pious man. The Lord told him to go and see a peasant who was more pious than he. He went. The peasant invoked the name of God when he woke up and went he went to bed; the rest of the day he worked in the fields. Narada did not understand and told the God "I pray and think of You 24 hours a day, how can you compare him to me ?" The God smiled and told him to take a cup filled to the brim with oil and carry it around the city without spilling a drop. Narada obeyed and came back successfully without spilling a drop. The God asked, "How many times did you think of me?".Narada replied, "Lord how could I think of You ? My mind was concentrated on ensuring that the oil did not spill." Thus the God made Narada realize the greatness of peasant's devotion. Visit and register free at http://kamyabology.com to read winning and success presentations

During one of his sojourns, the Guru gave his students a thin book to learn from while He was away ... for about a week . On his return, He asked them all whether they had learned the lessons. He had given them . All answered positively except his favorite student. He had not done the lessons. The teacher asked him again in the hope that maybe there was some communication problem .. Maybe he hadn't heard him well. The student again answered that he had learned only one line from the book .. The teacher blew his top so to say ... ONE WEEK and only a line .. and the boy had the impudence to say.. He had learnt just one line .... The Guru smacked the boy across his face ... The boy kept his face down in complete submission to his Guru .. The Guru's face was still livid with rage ... Again He asked him "How much did you learn?" (Maybe the boy was joking at the Guru's expense) "One line" answered the boy ... SMACK!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! !!!!!!! This one resounded in the ashram ....

Bad or Good
Once upon a time there lived a great sage. He had many disciples who held him in great respect. Some of his disciples were very pious in nature while others were dull witted. These dull witted disciples used to feel jealous of the pious disciples and blamed the great sage for partiality. The Master tried to convince them that his teachings were similar to all and if there is any difference I the wisdom it is due to their lack of sincerity and attention. The Master was hurt but to appear fair to all and teach the jealous students a lesson gave them a small and simple test. The test was to go to the nearby village and find and bring one good fellow. The complaining disciples were overjoyed and rushed to the village but to their bad luck they could not find one good guy ..every person had committed some crime or sin. They returned disappointed and accused the Master for giving them an impossible task . They came back frustrated and said that there was no single good person everybody had committed some crime or sin. The village was full of bad people and challenged him that even his favorite disciples would be un able to accomplish it. Smiling the Master called one of his pious disciple and gave him the task of going to the village and bringing one of the bad people. The jealous disciples were surprised and accused the Master saying that as believed by them he had given the easy task to his favorite disciple and he would face no problem in finding the bad people as the village was full of them. The Master counseled patience and after some time the pious disciple returned unsuccessful and told the Master that he could not find one bad fellow as every person has done some good deed or the other. The world is a mixture of joy and grief, and your wisdom depends on what you choose to take out of it. People who adopt a positive attitude in life, progress fast. The Real Meaning of Peace

"Once there was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The King looked at all the pictures. But there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them. One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains all around it. Above was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace. The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all. But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest - in perfect peace. Which picture do you think won the prize? The king

Power of Words
There once was a wise sage who wandered the countryside. One day, as he passed near a village, he was approached by a woman who told him of a sick child nearby. She beseeched him to help this child. So the sage came to the village, and a crowd gathered around him, for such a man was a rare sight. One woman brought the sick child to him, and he said a prayer over her. "Do you really think your prayer will help her, when medicine has failed?" yelled a man from the crowd. "You know nothing of such things! You are a stupid fool!" said the sage to the man. The man became very angry with these words and his face grew hot and red. He was about to say something, or perhaps strike out, when the sage walked over to him and said: "If one word has such power as to make you so angry and hot, may not another have the power to heal?" And thus, the sage healed two people that day. "Language does have the power to change reality. Therefore, treat your words as the mighty instruments they are - to heal, to bring into being, to nurture, to cherish, to bless, to forgive." - Daphne Rose Kingma

Thoughts and Disturbance

A man was sitting by a lake. He was throwing small pebbles into it from time to time. A young boy happened to cross by. He was intrigued to see that after every few minutes or so, the man would toss a pebble into the lake. The boy went up to the man and said, "Good pass time, this stone throwing?" "Hmmm," said the man. He seemed to be deep in thought and obviously did not wish to be disturbed. Sometime later, the man said softly, "Look at the water, it is absolutely still." The boy said, "Yeah, it is." The man tossed a pebble into the water and continued, "Only till I toss a pebble into it now do you see the ripples?" "Yeah," said the boy, "they spread further and further." "And soon, the water is still again," offered the man. The boy said, "Sure, it becomes quiet, after a while." The man continued, "What if we want to stop the ripples? The root cause of the ripples is the stone. Lets take the stone out. Go ahead and look for it."

Dreams and Determination

In ancient India there was a king who had everything except a child. He worshipped the gods for many years and finally Goddess Savitri gave the king the gift of a daughter. She was named Savitri after the goddess. Savitri was so beautiful and intelligent that no one dared to marry her. The king asked Savitri to choose a suitable husband for herself. Savitri traveled for many years until she reached a hermitage where many princes lived as ascetics giving up their luxury, wealth and power. When Savitri entered the hall of worship and paid respects to the eldest teacher, a young man entered the hall, guiding an old, blind man. Savitri asked the teacher, "Who is he?" The teacher replied, "He is prince Satyavan, a virtuous man, guiding his blind father who lost his kingdom. Like his name, he is the emblem of truth." Savitri decided to marry Satyavan. When Savitri returned home, her father inquired. Savitri happily replied, "Father, I have decided to marry Satyavan." But seeing Satyavan's horoscope, the astrologer said, "Satyavan will die one year from today." The king was stunned to hear this and requested Savitri to choose someone else. Savitri trembled and said, "But father, I have already chosen Satyavan, and I will not choose another man. I will share the precious one year with him only." Soon the king rode with Savitri to the hermitage to formalize the proposal. Satyavan was overjoyed to be offered such a bride. His father, the blind king, asked, "Savitri you are a princess, can you bear the hard life of the hermitage,

But Savitri could never forget that Satyavan's death was drawing closer. Finally, when only three days remained, Savitri prayed for three days and three nights. On the final day, she came out from the prayer room with the rising sun. Satyavan wondered to himself, why Savitri was praying so hard? When Satyavan was ready to go out to collect wood for the fire, Savitri rushed to his side and said, "I will come with you." "You look tired" said Satyavan " I will return soon. You rest." But Savitri insisted on accompanying him. In the woods, Satyavan suddenly felt dizzy while chopping the firewood and laid down. Savitri raised his head on her lap watching Satyavan's face carefully. Satyavan closed his eyes and began to breath slowly. Suddenly Lord Yama, the god of death, arrived. He caught the soul of Satyavan with his noose and headed towards his kingdom. Satyavan's body lay dead. Yama tried to console Savitri by saying, "Satyavan was a man of great virtue and happiness awaits him in my kingdom." Savitri did not say anything but rose and started after Yama. Yama objected, "You cannot follow me to the land of the dead!" Savitri replied, "Lord Yama. I know you are doing your duty of taking away the soul of my husband when it is time. But my duty as his wife is to stay beside him." "Your duty is over with the death of your husband. I admire your loyalty. I will grant you anything but the life of your husband." for the restoration of the kingdom and sight of her father-in-law." Yama granted the wishes and once again headed towards south through the rough roads of thorns and ditches. Savitri continued to follow, with torn clothes and bleeding feet. Yama said, "Savitri you have come far enough, now go back." Savitri said, "Lord Yama, my husband will find happiness in your kingdom but you are carrying away the happiness that is mine." "I admire your devotion" Yama said, "But you have to bend to your faith. I will grant you another wish except the life of your husband." "Give many children to my father, I was his only child" said Savitri and Yama granted her wish. Then he began to climb a steep hill. When Yama looked back he saw Savitri coming up the steep hill, tired and exhausted. "Savitri," Yama said in a loud voice "I forbid you to come farther. I am telling for the last time you have come far enough. I admire your courage and your firmness. I grant you one last favor, anything, but the life of your husband." Savitri got her last chance, and said, "Lord, then grant me many children, and let them be the children of Satyavan." Yama was surprised by Savitri's wit and strong will, "You have not asked for your husband's life, yet I cannot grant your wish without releasing Satyavan. You have won your husband's life." Savitri found herself at the same spot where she took her dying husband's head on her lap. Satyavan woke up and saw Savitri both crying and laughing. When asked what happened, Savitri said, "My love, let us return home."

Yama fulfilled all of Savitri's wishes. Satyavan became king and Savitri his queen. They lived long and were blessed with many children. When they were old, Yama came and together they happily departed for his kingdom

Savitri should have listened to his father and not mrry satyavan or accepted her fate and destiny of losing her husband.she would have simply surrendered to her fathers will or to her fate. But Savitri made her own decision and stuck to it and was so determined to live life on her own terms by with courage ,determination and tenacity. It teaches us the lessons that if we desire something we should be ready and determined to fight for it to achieve it. Dreams without determination to achieve it are just dreams. Like Savitri who followed Yama, we should pursue our dreams relentlessly and not let rejection/failure lead to dejection. Sometimes, to overcome obstacles or constraints , we have to r innovate or creative to achieve our dreams like what Savitri did by indirectly asking for sons . Also note the selflessness by asking to restore the father-in laws sight and kingdom. and children for her father. We should also build our emotional account by helping people wherever possible without expecting any returns in our journey towards our goal.

Who are you?

A prince went upto Swami Rama Tirtha and put his question O venerable sir, who is God? Where is He? Please take me to God. I wish to see Him.The Swami answered Dear prince, if you wish to see God I will have to tell Him who you are. So please give me your visiting card. When a man wants to see a high dignitary does he not send his card first? I will place your card in the hands of God I am sure He will see you. The prince thought the request was quite reasonable, quite in order to cpmply with. So he took a piece of paper and wrote his name Sri Gajpati Raju. The Swami read it. He returned the slip saying This is your name . God will like to know your who you are and not your name. The prince took back the slip and wrote in another Prince of Vijayanagram. Again the Swami remarked But that is your status. The confused prince wrote a third time Administrator of VIjaynagram. That is your position , rejoined the Swami. The prince thought, over deeply and wrote finally Man. No, that is your species. The prince wrote no more. you my descriptions, qualifications and attributes. I do not seem to know who I am ? So saying the prince reflected deeply. He began to introspect. He started the process of self analysis. Am I the physical body? No. The body belongs to me. It is my possession. I am the possessor of my body. I remain changeless while my body undergoes constant changes. Physicians prove that after every seven years the body of a man is entirely changed. Every particle of the body is replaced by a new particle. This body is in continuous flux. I am not it. Then who am I.?

The prince continued his investigation . Am I the mind? Or the intellect. No , he contemplated. . It cannot be . They are also continua lly changing. They are all mine. I am apart from my mind and intellect. The Swami then gently told him, oh price you are your Self. You are not your body ,mind or intellect.. The prince was astonished. He mediated and realized How sill I had been. I wanted to meet God. I wanted to know God. Now I find My own Self, my supreme nature, my Atman is God. Introspect analyze yourself. Think deeply you are the kernel and not the shell. Source : Vedanta Treatise : A. Parthasarathy

Success coin
The story is about a famous guru and his two disciples. Once their education was complete, and they were ready to leave, the guru called one of them and asked, " Now that your education is complete and it is time for you to leave and find your own place in the world, what plans do you have for your future? " The disciple said, " When I go into the world I will look for success and prosperity. " With a smile, the guru gave him a bag full of gold coins, blessed him, and allowed him to leave. Now the guru called the second disciple and put the same question to him. He replied, " I will go into the world and achieve success and be prosperous. " The guru gave him one silver coin, blessed him, and let him go. There was a pedestrian resting a few yards away. After both the disciples had left he went up to the guru and asked him why he gave a bag full of gold coins to the man who was going to look for success and prosperity for himself, while he gave only one silver coin to the man who wanted to achieve success on his own. The guru smiled and replied, " the man who is going to look for success and prosperity is unlikely to find it as he will be dependent on external forces for his accomplishments. He will need this bag of gold; it will not last long with him. The second man, he said, " is set to achieve success on his own, he will get it. He will also be at peace with himself. He does not need gold from me; he will earn enough for himself. I gave him one silver coin which is what he need for his bus journey to his destination" .

The Tea Cup

There was a couple who used to go to England to shop in the beautiful stores. They both liked antiques and pottery and especially teacups. This was their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. One day in this beautiful shop they saw a beautiful teacup. They said, "May we see that? We've never seen one quite so beautiful." As the lady handed it to them, suddenly the teacup spoke. "You don't understand," it said. "I haven't always been a teacup. There was a time when I was red and I was clay. My master took me and rolled me and patted me over and over and I yelled out, "let me alone", but he only smiled, "Not yet." "Then I was placed on a spinning wheel," the teacup said, "and suddenly I was spun around and around and around. Stop it! I'm getting dizzy! I screamed. But the master only nodded and said, 'Not yet.' Then he put me in the oven. I never felt such heat. I wondered why he wanted to burn me, and I yelled and knocked at the door. I could see him through the opening and I could read his lips as He shook his head, 'Not yet.' Finally the door opened, he put me on the shelf, and I began to cool. 'There, that's better,' I said. And he brushed and painted me all over. The fumes were horrible. I thought I would gag. 'Stop it, stop it!' I cried. He only nodded, 'Not yet.'

Then suddenly he put me back into the oven, not like the first one. This was twice as hot and I knew I would suffocate. I begged. I pleaded. I screamed. I cried. All the time I could see him through the opening nodding his head saying, 'Not yet.' Then I knew there wasn't any hope. I would never make it. I was ready to give up. But the door opened and he took me out and placed me on the shelf. One hour later he handed me a mirror and said, 'Look at yourself. And I did. I said, 'That's not me; that couldn't be me. It's beautiful. I'm beautiful.' 'I want you to remember, then,' he said, 'I know it hurts to be rolled and patted, but if I had left you alone, you'd have dried up. Iknow it made you dizzy to spin around on the wheel, but if I had stopped, you would have crumbled. I knew it hurt and was hot and disagreeable in the oven, but if I hadn't put you there, you would have cracked. I know the fumes were bad when I brushed and painted you all over, but if I hadn't done that, you never would have hardened; you would not have had any color in your life. And if I hadn't put you back in that second oven you wouldn't survive for very long because the hardness would not have held. Now you are a finished product. You are what I had in mind when I first began with you.

Move closer to find yourself

The young man had lost his job and didn't know which way to turn. So he went to see the old preacher. Pacing about the preacher's study, the young man ranted about his problem. Finally he clenched his fist and shouted, "I've begged God to say something to help me. Tell me, Preacher, why doesn't God answer?" The old preacher, who sat across the room, spoke something in reply -- something so hushed it was indistinguishable. The young man stepped across the room. "What did you say?" he asked.

The preacher repeated himself, but again in a tone as soft as a whisper. So the young man moved closer until he was leaning on the preacher's chair. "Sorry," he said. "I still didn't hear you."

With their heads bent together, the old preacher spoke once more. "God sometimes whispers," he said, "so we will move closer to hear Him.." This time the young man heard and he understood. We all want God's voice to thunder through the air with the answer to our problem. But God's is the still, small voice . . . the gentle whisper. Perhaps there's a reason. Nothing draws human focus quite like a whisper. God's whisper means I must stop my ranting and move close to Him, until my head is bent together with His. And then, as I listen, I will find my answer.

Work or Serve
One evening a Swamiji of Sri Ramakrishna Mutt was addressing the participants of an MNC company on the concept of work culture. One of the participants asked the following question to the Swamiji: I am a senior manager of Materials Department and I joined an organization 25 years ago as an Engineer Trainee and over the last 25 years I have gone through every experience in the organization and I am now the senior manager looking after the material function independently. During the initial part of my career, the job was very challenging and interesting. Every day was exciting and I looked forward to each day with lot of interest. However, all those exciting days are gone since I do not find my job any more interesting because there is nothing new in my job. As I have seen and handled every conceivable situation there is no more challenges in my work. I am now feeling bored because I am doing a routine job. However, Swamiji, I am living in the same house for over forty years, I am the son for the same parents for over forty five years, I am the father for the same children for the past ten years and the husband for the same lady for the past twenty years. In these personal roles I do not feel bored and the passage of time has not taken away the zeal from me. Please tell me why I am bored of the routine in the office and not in the house?

This was a very interesting question and we were all very anxious and curious to know what the Swamiji had to say. The response from him was very interesting and convincing. He asked the executive the question: Please tell me for whom does your wife and the mother of children cook ? The executive replied that obviously my wife cooks for all of us -the family. Then the Swamiji said that because the wife 'Serves' others and because of this service mindedness, she is not feeling tired or bored. Similarly, when you are at Home you are not perceiving your role as the necessary work.

But in an office, we 'Work' and not 'Serve'.

Anything we consider, as service will not make us feel bored. That is difference between Serving and Working.

Are you ready for success ?

This tale of five young travelers in search of wealth and wisdom explains our follies while seeking success. The five young men gathered close around the fire. The day-long trek across the arid high plains had left them weary and discouraged.

Was this journey an act of otherwise sane men?

Certainly the elders could not be mistrusted. Their constant ramblings about the man called Jambali filled the air almost daily. They said he was a man of immense wealth and wisdom. A man who freely dispensed both to any who sought it.

Yet many had traveled to the eastern mountains in search of this man, and all had returned weeks later with nothing to show but callused feet. Was it all just a wistful tale; a fantasy concocted to give the people of their desperately poor village a reason to hope?

Page 68

This was the question that plagued the five travelers as they bedded down for the night, their hearts full of hope and their heads full of doubt.

The sun rose to find only four travelers remaining; the fifth having let doubt win over. His note by the ashes of the fire implored the four to push on, but he had returned to the village, unable to pursue a journey that held no promise.

And so the four travelers hiked throughout the morning and reached the tree line of the eastern slopes by mid-day. It was a welcome escape from the relentless heat of the desert sun. They had not walked more than 100 yards beneath the shade of the trees, when they happened across an old woman.

They told the woman of their quest to find a man called Jambali, and asked if she knew where to find him. She exclaimed that they were indeed fortunate, for he was a nomad and was camped for the day just over the next rise. She bid them caution however, as he was not fond of unannounced strangers to his camp.

Page 69

Thanking the old woman, they hastily made their way to the rise and there upon did devise a plan. One of them would ascend the rise to investigate the layout of the camp and then report back to the others. In this way they could best decide upon a method of entering the camp.

They elected a scout, and he ascended the rise while the others anxiously waited. After a short time the scout returned looking forlorn and discouraged. He announced to the others that he did not see the camp of a wealthy man, rather was it the camp of a pauper. He spoke of a man dressed in rags and a tent of simple design.

And then this traveler did proclaim their journey a fool's adventure, and he marched back into the desert with a heavy heart.

The remaining three travelers were not so easily dissuaded. One was elected and he ascended the rise to scout the camp. He shortly returned with a puzzling report. Not only was this man without wealth, but he was also crazy.

He reached the top and peered into the camp. He too witnessed a tiger of great ferocity, but he put his fear aside and decided to help the man defeat the beast.

He quickly fashioned a makeshift spear using a dry branch sharpened with his hunting knife. He ran down the hill and jumped between the man and the snarling tiger. He readied his weapon and was on the verge of thrusting it into the beast, when the man suddenly let out a shrill whistle and grabbed the spear from the traveler's hands.

The tiger abruptly ceased its attack, then trotted over to stand next to the man. Obviously, a cruel trick had been played upon the traveler.

Distraught over what had just transpired, the traveler demanded an explanation. The man explained that the old woman had seen the four travelers approaching from the desert, and had warned him of their arrival.

He explained that his antics were designed to invite only the most sturdy of heart into his camp. The man went on to introduce himself as Jambali the Wealth-Giver. The traveler did so, explaining that the trip had began with five, of which he was the only one remaining. He went on to tell Jambali about his people's belief that all who visited him would receive wealth and wisdom.

Jambali told the traveler that his people's belief was true, but that before wealth can be possessed, one must first have the wisdom to own it. Jambali explained, "The first traveler gave up on the first night. He did not want to work at acquiring wealth." "The second traveler saw a poor man's camp. Jambali watched as the traveler digested these words. They were powerful words that sank deep into the traveler's heart.

Then, suddenly and without notice, the traveler rose to his feet and thanked Jambali for these wealth-giving secrets.

He was overwhelmed with exhilaration at the wisdom he had just received, and could barely contain his desire to depart for the village with news of his good fortune on this journey. He quickly bade Jambali farewell and promised he would tell his people what he had learned.

And so, this traveler did declare the journey a success, and he trotted into the desert with a glad heart.

As the traveler disappeared from sight, Jambali strode into his tent and filled a ruby-rimmed cup to overflowing with a dark, red wine.

He drank largely, allowing the warm liquid to both caress and exhilarate his senses. A drop escaped from the corner of his mouth and momentarily danced upon his chin, as if unsure of which direction to fall before relinquishing its hold to the ground below.
