Forming the Plural of Words


Plural means more than one. We indicate the plural by adding s or es to the ends of words. To form the plurals of words, follow these rules. There are five spelling rules for forming the plural of words. Spelling Rule 3. For most words that end in f, add the letter s to form the plural; however, for some words that end in the letter f, you must change the f to v and add es to form the plural as in half/halves, calf/calves, leaf/leaves. Spelling Rule 4. If a word ends in o (when preceded by a consonant), s or ss, sh, ch, tch, or x, add es to form the plural as in potato/potatoes, boss/bosses, dish/dishes, church/churches and match/matches, box/boxes. Spelling Rule 5. The plural forms of some words are irregular and must be memorized such as man/men, woman/women, foot/feet.
