Lesson 534
Adding Suffixes
Three major rules determine the correct spelling of words when adding a suffix. Lesson 534 Spelling rule for adding suffixes to root words that end in a single vowel followed by a single consonant letter. When a one-syllable word ends with a single vowel followed by a single consonant, double the final consonant before adding a suffix that begins with a vowel such as hit/hitter, drop/dropping, and skip/skipper. When the suffix begins with a consonant, add the suffix without making any changes to the root word as in sad/sadly, sin/sinful, and bad/badly. If a multiple syllable word ends with a single vowel followed by a single consonant, double the final consonant only if the last syllable is stressed such as in begin/beginning, emit/emitting, and admit/admitting. If the last syllable is not stressed, do not double the final consonant as in cancel/canceling, enter/entering. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. map/mapping flip/flipper admit/admitting dim/dimmer refit/refitting emit/emitting drip/dripping tap/tapping run/running hid/hidden stop/stopping sin/sinful stab/stabbing fit/fittest bad/baddest man/manly cram/cramming credit/creditor bet/bettor wet/wetter label/labeling win/winner
