MONTGOMERY COUNTY PLANNING DEPARTMENT

THE MARYLAND-NATIONAL CAPITAL PARK AND PLANNING COMMISSION

September 4, 2009

Dear Friend of Historic Preservation:

The Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is now accepting proposals for
consideration for 2010 historic preservation grants.  Nonprofit organizations and local governments are
eligible to apply.  Eligible projects include, but are not limited to:

• public education and outreach projects such as website development or enhancement, lectures,
videos, workshops or other training;
• historical and archeological surveys, oral history documentation such as taping/transcriptions,
development and installation of historic district and historic resource signs;
• feasibility studies for restoration or preservation of buildings, sites, and historical artifacts;
• walking tours, handbooks, design guidelines and/or brochures related to historic districts or
individual historic resources; and
• photographic displays or other types of exhibits pertaining to local history, history/historic site
brochures or books;

With support from the Montgomery County Council and the County Executive, $30,000 is available for
historic preservation‐related projects to be completed during 2010.  In 2009, the average grant award
was approximately $2,400 and the largest grant awarded was $5000.

For this grant round, the HPC has put a special emphasis on projects: 1) that develop organizational
outreach and educational capacities through enhancements to websites or other technologies; 2)
promote outreach efforts and enhance public understanding of historic preservation; and 3) increase
understanding of, and protection for, historic resources within the county.

Applicants must match grants dollar‐for‐dollar with cash or in‐kind contributions.  Applicants must
include a budget documenting project costs and the source of cash and in‐kind contributions.  At the
completion of the project, grantees are required to document all project expenses and matching
contributions.

Applicants should be submitted to: Historic Preservation Commission, M‐NCPPC, 8787 Georgia Avenue,
Silver Spring, MD 20910.  Applications must be postmarked by October 15, 2009.  The HPC reserves the
right to modify the amount and scope of services of the original proposal. After the decision by the HPC,
the Maryland‐National Capital Park and Planning Commission will enter into a grant agreement with
each group for the planned work.  The scope of work must be completed in 2010.

Funding through the Historic Preservation Grant Fund can enhance your organization’s contributions to
the preservation and understanding of the County’s irreplaceable cultural legacy, and I encourage you to
consider applying.  See www.montgomeryplanning.org/historic/grants/Grants.shtm for application
materials or call the Historic Preservation Section at 301.563.3400.

Sincerely,
