MS Office 2007: Download Center

Microsoft Office 2007 introduced new file formats and extensions for Excel, PowerPoint, and Word based on XML. The new extensions differentiate between macro-enabled and macro-free files, with ".docx" indicating macro-free Word files and ".docm" indicating macro-enabled Word files. This has caused compatibility issues for those using older Office versions, as Word 2003 cannot open ".docx" files. However, there are options like having the creator save as the older ".doc" or ".rtf" formats, or installing a compatibility pack to allow opening the newer file types.

MS Office 2007

Microsoft Office Excel 2007, Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007, and Microsoft Office
Word 2007 have new file types and extensions based on the new XML file formats in the
2007 Microsoft Office system. The new file name extensions are based on the previous
extensions, with the addition of a character to differentiate between macro-enabled and
macro-free files. For example, a .docx extension indicates a macro-free file, and a .docm
extension indicates a macro-enabled file.

A Macro is a mini-program within the document. For example, you

can create a macro to automatically inset a specific header, or open
documents etc. Macros can also be virus like programs designed to
attack your computer. Usually, if you know the source of the
document, macros should not be an issue.

This new file type has caused problems for those of us with the "older" Office products,
since Word 2003 will not open docx file. One way to solve this is to have the creator of
the 2007 document use "SAVE AS" and save as '.doc'. In the "SAVE AS" dialog box there
are several options - another good one is '.RTF' any word processing program can open
these!

If you are at home - you can also download and install a converter to your computer that
will translate these docx files.

On the computer with an earlier version of Office, go to the Download Center and
download the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for 2007 Office Word, Excel and
PowerPoint File Formats.
