Solution Assignment

This document discusses two examples of calculating porosity from soil sample data. The first example calculates porosity using the dry weight, saturated weight, and weight of kerosene displaced of a soil sample. It finds a porosity of 29%. The second example uses the volume of a soil core sample and volume of water it displaces to calculate a porosity of 30%. The document then gives data from a field test measuring travel time of a tracer between wells to calculate the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer, found to be 23.4 m/hr.

Assignment (7) Ground Water

1- Porosity of soil is of great importance in ground water study. For purpose of estimating the porosity of soil sample , the following data for two different tests are available: (a) An undisturbed soil sample has an oven-dry weight of 825.61 g. After saturation with kerosene its weight is 922.47 g. The saturated sample is then immersed in kerosene and displaces 331.59 g. What is the porosity of the soil sample? (b) A cylindrical soil sample of diameter 5.0 cm and length 15.0 cm is obtained in a core tube. The soil in the tube displaces 205.7 cm3 of water (after any trapped air is removed). Determine the porosity. Solution 1. A- Dry weight Saturated weight = 825.61 = 922.47 gm gm gm

2- In a field test it was observed that a time of 16 hr was required for a tracer to travel from one observation well to another. The wells are 25 m apart, and the difference in their water surface elevations is 0.3 m. Samples of the aquifer between the wells indicate that the porosity is about 18 percent. Compute the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer assuming it is homogeneous. Solution V act = J= n= K=

= 1.56 m/hr = 0.012 = 0.18 = 23.4 m/hr = 0.65 cm/s
