Hyperbolic Functions: Ix Ix Ix Ix

This document defines and compares hyperbolic functions to trigonometric functions. It states that sinh x is an odd function while cosh x is an even function. Some key properties are presented, such as sinh 0 = 0 and cosh 0 = 1. Graphs of cosh x and sinh x are provided showing their shapes over the given interval.

HYPERBOLIC FUNCTIONS The usual trigonometric functions may be dened as sin x = eix eix eix + eix , cos x = 2i 2

whereas the hyperbolic functions are dened as sinh x = ex ex ex + ex , cosh x = . 2 2

Note that sinh x is an odd function of x and cosh x is an even function. sinh 0 = 0, cosh 0 = 1. Moreover cosh2 x sinh2 x = 1 sinh(x + y ) = sinh x cosh y + cosh x sinh y cosh(x + y ) = cosh x cosh y + sinh x sinh y cosh x + sinh x = ex , cosh x sinh x = ex . The general solution of y + a2 y = 0 can be expressed in any of the following four ways: y (x) = eiax + eiax y (x) = A cos ax + B sin ax y (x) = C sin(ax + D) [= (C cos D ) sin ax + (C sin D) cos ax] y (x) = E cos(ax + F ). The general solution of y a2 y = 0 can be expressed in any of the following four ways: y (x) = eax + eax y (x) = A cosh ax + B sinh ax y (x) = C sinh(ax + D) [= (C cosh D) sinh ax + (C sinh D ) cosh ax] y (x) = E cosh(ax + F ). We plot the two functions, cosh x, and sinh x in the following gure.
