News and Notes

Week of Dec. 16, 2013

What We Are up to:

Reading: We are continuing with our work on determining importance when we read. The kids are using the important happenings in their independent reading books Writing: We will continue to learn more about opinion writing. The students will be working on a piece about whether a cat or a dog makes a better pet. Math: We are finishing our unit on multiplication. The straight algorithm (how we learned) is our main focus on solving multi digit multiplication problems. Keep practicing those facts! Social Studies: We are continuing a unit on immigration. The kids will be finding out where their ancestors have traveled from to settle in the US. In Monday folders, there is a project about family artifacts. It is not due until January 8. I will be going over the specifics on Tuesday.

Secret snowflake:
The dates and projects for Secret Snowflake are: Due on Tuesday, December 17: A bookmark Wednesday December 18: A poem or another piece of writing about your snowflake. An Acrostic is always fun. Thursday December 19: A small craft or A Top Ten list of great things about your snowflake. Friday, December 20: A small wrapped present ($5-$7) Remember it is a secret, SHHHHH! Please make sure the name of your snowflake is on all of your items, but your name is not. We will be receiving our wrapped gift at our party and guessing who did wonderful things for us!

Volunteers:
Over vacation I will be working on the January volunteering schedule. Please let me know if there are any changes to your availability. VERB QUIZ Reminder there will be a quiz on verbs. It will have action and linking verbs and identifying past present, and future tense in verbs.
