Conventions
There are many conventions in film noir, including smoking, this shows the Characters are cool as smoking was popular during the time film noir was filmed. They used the weather in film noir. For example, if it was raining you could tell that something sad and emotional was happening. Film Noir films were the crime genre therefore film noir films where filmed in black and white to represent danger. Therefore They carried on using it until technology could dim down colours. They used a Non Diagetic sound in Film Noir. They would speed up the music if there was a chase to make the viewers more intrigued about what was happening.
Lighting
The lighting in film noir Is very different to most films, the film is in black and white. Through out the film a lot of the lighting is mostly shadows for example in one scene in double identity the lighting is only focused on her body and not her face, this is to show that Phyllis is provocative and creates a sense of mystery. The focusing on Phyllis face is always softened, this is to make her appear more beautiful. They also use the lighting very cleverly by using blinds to create shadows on the walls, this creates a sense of danger as if the character Is in bars or a spider web.
Hays Code
The Hays code meant that films couldnt show violence, instead film noir cleverly made it seem like there was violence so the audience knew what was happening without actually seeing it for example in Double Indentity when a Walter Neff is killing Phyllis's Husband and we only see Phylliss facial expression which is a slight smile as we already know she wanted her husband dead. The reason they did this because there wasnt actually age restrictions on films when these types of films were made, so any age could see it.
