Mapes Mapes English III 12 December 2012 Knock, Knock: How Humor Effects Students Teacher: Why have you got cotton wool in your ears, do you have an infection? Pupil: Well you keep saying that things go in one ear and out the other so I am trying to keep them all in! (Top 20 Teacher Jokes). One of teachers greatest struggles is getting students to pay attention and then retain the information. Teachers use of humor can actually help students learn and retain the material taught in class. In fact, many studies have been done detailing the link between humor and learning in the classroom (Wanzer). These studies have spent over a decade researching the connection (Weimer). Humor has been shown to have a positive effect on students including their experience in the classroom and their learning (Wanzer). However teachers who are not naturally funny should beware, trying to be funny when one is not has been shown to have a negative effect (Wanzer). One should be aware of ones humor level to decide whether or not they will be effective in the classroom (Wanzer). This paper examines the positive and negative effects of humor in the classroom focusing on the classroom environment, students view of the teacher, and the effects on learning and retention.
