OZONE (O3)
• Blue coloured gas
• Pungent smelling
• Very reactive
• Absorbs harmful component of sunlight (UV B)

MECHANISM
WHAT IS OZONE HOLE
severe depletion of the
ozone layer high above
Antarctica.

primarily caused by
human-produced
compounds that release
chlorine and Bromine
gases in the
stratosphere.
OZONE DEPLETING
SUBSTANCES (ODS)
• Chlorofluoro Carbons (Freons) – foam
blowing agents, solvents, refrigerants.
• Bromofluoro Carbons (Halons) – Fire
Extinguishers
• Carbon Tetrachloride – Industrial Chemical
• Trichloroethane – Solvent
• Methyl Bromide - Fumigant

responsible
THICKNESS OF OZONE LAYER

One Dobson Unit (DU)

equals to

0.01 mm thickness at
standard temperature
and pressure.

CFCs cannot reach the stratosphere because
they are heavier than air.

The winds in the troposphere stir around

ODS molecules to mix them with air and
lift them up to the ozone layer.

• The amount of UVB measured at the

surface is doubled during the spring season.

• One chlorine atom can destroy over

100,000 ozone molecules.
HARMFUL EFFECTS
Effects of Ozone depletion
HUMAN HEALTH PLANTS

Decrease in crop yields

 Increase eye cataracts
i,e., corn, rice, soybean
 Suppression of the Immune Damage to aquatic plants
system essential to ocean food
 Increase skin cancer webs
 Increase eye burning
 Premature aging
 Sun Burns
Breaks down plastics and other polymers
