Tutorial Questions

QUESTIONS FOR THURSDAY 2013-11-07
INSTRUCTIONS: FOUR OF THE QUESTIONS BELOW WILL BE SET IN THE TEST ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2013. FOR THE TEST, YOU WILL HAVE TO ANSWER ANY TWO OF THE FOUR.

1.

Discuss the outstanding features of two (2) important buildings each of the periods of Western medieval architectural history known as (1) Early Christian Architecture, and (2) Byzantine Architecture.

(20 marks)

2. The development of architecture may be described as the development of construction techniques

over the ages. Discuss the use of the following construction techniques by the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, the Roman Empire, and Byzantium: (1) post-and-lintel (2) corbelling (3) arch (4) vault, and (5) dome.

3. Prehistoric settlements such as Skara Brae settlement in Scotland (2500 BCE 1700 BCE) and Catalhuyuk in south-central Turkey (c 6000 BCE) show that adequate shelter has always been mans pursuit. Discuss, comparatively, the architecture and construction of these two prehistoric settlements.

4. Describe the major characteristics of ancient Greek Architecture, detailing the following Greek Architectural Orders: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian, and giving two examples of buildings for each Order.

5. Explain the purpose of the Roman Forum in ancient Roman civilization, and describe the functions of the temple and basilica usually found there. Describe the characteristics and explain the functions of the following types of ancient Roman buildings: theatre, amphitheatre, and circus, giving one example of each and say where it is located.
