Henry DeJong Introduction / Reflection Letter When looking at my initial work and comparing the to the work I am producing

now I think my writing has developed over the course of the year. My writing has changed several ways. For one, the way I write papers has gone through a drastic change. Secondly, my ability to write in different formats has increased. The last way my writing has changed is through my revision process. When first entering the English 1101 class I had trouble starting papers and getting black on white. My writing process has drastically changed due to writing into the day. Looking at my composition book I can see the difference in my early entries and my latest. My early entries were 4 or 5 sentences long, while my last entries were upwards of an entire page. While the time limit did not change, my ability to continue writing was enhanced. In the beginning of the year I had trouble writing for more than a few sentences at the time, after the many entries in my daybook writing for long periods of a time became easier. Another way my writing process has changed is through how I start a paper. Prior to English 1101 I would take a considerable amount of time to start an essay or any work. I would be afraid to start a paper because I didnt want to write an unintelligent essay or not have fully formed thoughts. At this point in my writing career I can and do jump into papers and essays and just start writing them. Due to reading the article on writing first drafts I have no problem diving in and writing them without fear of creating a terrible first draft. My ability to write in different formats and for different topics has increased due to the class. The daybook entries and the forum posts have helped me write

personal reflections. Prior to the class I had difficulty writing anything personal. Due to this class I have been able to write about my personal analyses and stories without an issue. I have seen this process change through the drafts of my Literacy Memoir. Through the drafts I have added personal thoughts and reflections rather than just stating the facts, and have bettered my essay due to it. I believe I have become more adept at writing for specific audiences. Throughout the course I have had to write to multiple audience. I had to write to my peers, Ms. Davis, and to myself, all in different formats. When writing the forum posts I had to write to both my peers and my teacher, which I never had the challenge of doing before. When writing to a broader audience I believe you must be more deliberate in what you say and make sure your writing is clear. I also had to write to the leader of a campus organization in the format of a business letter. That assignment also had a real life purpose. The purpose of the business letter to the discourse community was to have the leader allow me to observe the community. The letter had weight and therefore made me be very conscientious of my writing. I also had to use the specific format and serious and professional tone for a business letter. I had never done anything similar to this prior, and that writing assignment gave me more skills. In contrast, this year I also had to write the literacy memoir which required me to be more open and honest about myself and be more personal.

My writing has evolved through my writing revisions. Before this class I would look for spelling mistakes and grammar errors only to make revisions. Due to peer reviews and teacher reviews of my papers I have changed the way I make

revisions. I look at revisions as more of a way to expand upon my papers and go more into detail with my thoughts. For example, in my initial draft of my literacy memoir I simply told the reader I found bad grades discouraging. In the final draft I made a point to explain why the poor grades affected me personally. My revisions also now include making my writing more descriptive. In my original draft of rhetorical genre project when describing the conventions of my genre I used brief thoughts. Later in the revisions I explained more in depth to the reader what the conventions were in the genre. I believe my revisions have become more in depth while before they were only superficial. I believe I have evolved as a writer in several ways. Not only what I write has changed, but also how I write it. When looking through my English Portfolio I would look for reflections, more descriptive details in the final drafts, and the adaption of my writing through different genres. These three major strengths in my writing are what I believe improved most over the year.
