Intended Curriculum 2

The intended curriculum for the class focuses on the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Math, while following South Carolina state standards for Social Studies and Science. Students rotate between classrooms for different subjects, with one teacher handling ELA and Social Studies, and another teaching Math and Science. Technology is integrated into daily lessons and assessments to support differentiated instruction and prepare students for the future. Anti-bullying and gang violence prevention are also addressed, but could be emphasized more prominently according to the author.

Intended Curriculum

The intended curriculum for my class is the Common Core Standards. The standards require that students stay in their classroom learning environment and switch out to resources classes. However at Brookdale 4th and 5th grade classrooms alternate. For example my mentor teacher teachers ELA and Social Studies, and her students would switch with her co-teacher a classroom over who taught Math and Science. Only the Math and ELA are Common Core standards, Social Studies and Science are still South Carolina state standards. However Ms. Berry infuses her ELA standards in with her Social Studies lessons on a regular basis. Technology is a significant aspect of the curriculum at Brookdale. The smart board is used every day with lessons, videos, and classroom answering devices for review sessions. Students are also tested via technology to differentiate instruction to be technologically savvy, which I feel is a great contributor to the continuous improvement at the school over the past 2 years. The special curriculum that is found at Brookdale has to deal with bullying and gang violence. These areas are not significantly highlighted as they should be in my opinion but they are highlighted. A great example that I would suggest is having a character trait display board by the office and a student that has gone above and beyond to exemplify the trait of the month, is selected by the teacher and his/peers.
