Data archiving is used by companies to reduce data volumes in their systems and comply with legal retention requirements. Data that is no longer needed for business is written from the database to an archive and then deleted from the database. The archived data must remain accessible at all times. There are two types of archiving based on technology: ADK-based archiving used by ABAP applications and XML-based archiving used by ABAP applications with XML interfaces and Java applications. IT process monitoring tracks database and table growth to determine which data should be archived and the order it should be archived in.
