ADA Checklist

By: Heather Schaller

Accommodation Plan For Black River Child Care Center

These are the recommendations for the ADA Checklist that I have completed for Black River Child Care Center & Preschool. This will be a complete list of all the areas that I found that would need some adjustment to them. Please know that I am completing these as requested for a course that I am taking for the Inclusion Credential. The first area that I will speak about is the Accessibility Approach/Entrance the pathway to be used for wheelchairs and handicapped people. The ramped area is inconsistent with the measuring process this should measure at 36 along the entire ramped area. When I measured this area it measured at intervals of 32 to 36. M y recommendation for this would be to increase the necessary area to make it 36 from start to finish. The next suggestion would be hand railings along the walk way ramp for handicapped people. The requirements are to have hand railings on all ramps that are longer than 6 feet long. These railings should be on both sides of the ramp or walk way. My recommendation is to add railings to the handicapped walk way in front of the building, They should be at least 34 to 38 in height. The next area would be the handicapped accessible parking spot. There is a need for a van accessible space which should measure 8 foot wide and have 98 of vertical clearance available for lift equipped vans. My recommendation would be to reconfigure the van-accessible space. The next area would be the signage used on the outside of the building for handicapped parking areas. These should be posted so other vehicles dont park in the area needed for unloading. The last area for the entrance area is there should be signage that is posted at the point of inaccessible entrances that have directions to the accessible entrance for the handicapped.

The second area of concern is the Access to Goods and Services. In this section I only found one area that would need some degree of repair. This is the signage for areas of service signs should be mounted at 60 from the floor. This is signage such as but not limited to bathrooms, and different rooms in the center. Our signs at this time measure at 42 in height. So my recommendation would be to place signs at the 60 if this is possible. Signs should have raised letters, Grade II Braille, and that meet all other permanent room or space signage. The third area is Usability of Rest Rooms. In this area I found that there are no signs that give direction to the accessible restrooms, located at restrooms that are inaccessible to handicapped. My recommendation would to make such signage to post by the restrooms that are inaccessible. The next area of concern with the restrooms would be the accessibility of the handle into the womens restroom the door is a push to open door into the restroom which may be hard to open for a handicapped person. My recommendation would be to put directional signage for the employee restroom for a handicapped person to use that restroom. The other issue with the womens restroom is that there is not sufficient space for a wheelchair bond individual to enter the bathroom because of the changing table behind the entrance. My recommendation would be again to place a sign there to direct them to the staff restroom for this use or to remove the changing table from the bathroom. The stalls also may need some repair or upgrade. On the handicapped stall the knob on the stall door is not able to be opened or closed with a closed fist. Recommendation for this is to try to install a different knob on this door. The size of handicapped stall is also recommended to be 5 feet by 5 feet

and when I measured this is was not this size. Recommendation would be to try to move the partitions if possible. In conclusion these are the findings of the ADA checklist as I have went over and found that the center will be shown this report and the checklist to see where I found these findings. I know that all my recommendations may not be done but I have found that these are the areas in which that could use some changes.
