Pendulum Experiment
Pendulum Experiment
Pendulum Experiment
Introduction:
Something hanging from a fixed point which, when pulled back and released, is free to swing down by force of gravity is called a pendulum. The pendulum helps scientists determine the gravitational force which is affected by things such as distance from the center of earth, masses attracting upwards, and density of matter around you.
Purpose:
The purpose of this experiment was to see how long it would take for the pendulum to do one full one swing. Also we wanted to find out the acceleration of gravity.
Procedure:
We tied string to a ruler and at the end that was not tied to the string was a washer. All this was anchored by a book on the ruler. The string was wrapped around the ruler many times to reduce friction, We recorded the time it took for our pendulum to make a full swing using a timer. WE repeated this last step 10 times for each length of string.
Materials:
A book, rulers, washers, string, and a timer.

Data Analysis:
During our .25 m test we came the closest to gravity. Our furthest was our .1 m. Our average gravity was close to the standard Earth gravity of 9.08. My comprehensive comparison graph compared to the graph generated by excel was not far off. I was 21% off, for the .1m pendulum and the .5m pendulum I was 19% off. My gravity was off by 13%.
Conclusion:
There are many factors that made my gravity and time be different than the computer generated one. Maybe we stopped the timer to early or late. We could have had a lot of friction from the sting. Possibly we might have cut the string not to size. Overall my calculations and math are not far off.
