Tables and hierarchies may be useful Prepare Lesson Introductions try to draw students into the lesson with a n attractive and interesting introduction Create Advance Organizers verbal or written statements at the beginning of lessons that preview and structure new material and link it to the students existing background knowledge
Review and Introduction review previous activities to activate students prior knowledge Presentation this phase will be very short. Prepare a brief presentation to help students develop background knowledge Comprehension Monitoring informally assess student understanding. Allow students to be very involved and avoid lapsing into a long monologue. Can question students, have them provide examples, do think-pairshare, have a vote, ask for a choral response Integration this is a second cycle of presenting information and checking students understanding, this time, help students integrate the knowledge theyve gained Closure summarize the information, emphasize important points, and provide links to which information in the next lesson can be attached
Informal assessment possible during discussion Have students answer short response or essay questions Ask questions that require students to apply information Have students organize concepts into a hierarchy
Students kept actively thinking, not passively receiving information Potential for groupwork Interaction with classmates Students get to talk Sense of community
Lecture Discussion is a whole-class instruction model that allows for deep and thorough understanding of an organized body of knowledge through class discussion.
