Planning for whole group instruction plan to present content in the same way you would in any lesson Organizing groups plan in advance for students to be placed in heterogeneous groups based on achievement and skill levels Planning for team study this exercise will require clear learning objectives and questions with convergent answers Calculating base scores and improvement points a students base score is the average of previous test and quiz grades. Improvement points are awarded in comparison to the base score.
Instruction this is the same as typical whole-group instruction Transition into teams make it clear to students how improvement points are earned and devise rewards that teams will be interested in earning Team study monitor groups. You may have to intervene if they are not going smoothly or if someone is not participating. Recognizing achievement This is where improvement points are awarded
Understanding of content and group processes should be assessed separately. The former can be done through quizzes and tests. The latter will be more complicated. For this, consider who is contributing, whether interaction is positive and supportive, whether the sexes contribute equally, and whether different races and ethnicities are being included.
Team awards provide extrinsic motivation. Groups may also become competitive, looking to outearn other groups. Some students may enjoy helping one another learn. Grades are always a factor.
This model allows students to help one another become higher achievers and strengthens community within the classroom.
