Teacher Candidate: Cortney Lollis Subject/Grade: Math/ Kindergarten Learning Objective:

Lesson # 5 Date and Time of Lesson: Wednesday 11/20 10am

The learner will combine shapes to make different shapes by using pattern block.

Alignment with Standards: KG.6- Compose simple shapes to form larger shapes Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections:
Up to this point students have had experience identifying shapes and naming them. The learning objective is appropriate in terms of development because every child will be able to name the majority of the shapes presented during this lesson. The objects that they are not familiar with will be explained in detail. In this lesson students will use their prior knowledge of color words and coloring to color in a pattern block turkey. For students who do not know their shapes I will allow them to hold the shapes and name them. By holding the shapes students will be able to feel the shapes vertices and edges.

Assessment(s) of the Objectives:

Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Students will be assessed through class discussion by pulling smaller shapes and making a larger shape. Students will first have the chance to explore on their own by using the pattern blocks and will later use the blocks to make the shapes I have demonstrated for them. I will assess the students by seeing if they can identify the shapes by the proper names and lining up the correct shapes to make the larger shape. Ex. 3 rhombus makes 1 hexagon. Use of Formative Assessment Class and individual discussion will help me determine how well the students understand the information presented. Do the students remember the names of the shapes from previous lessons? Can the students identify the shapes alongside other objects? Can the students identify the new shapes they are not familiar with after brief explanation? The result of this assessment will determine what to do for the following day/lesson. Did the students grasp the information enough to move on to larger and more complex shapes? Do I need to reteach the material in a different way?

The learner will combine shapes to make different

Accommodations:
For students who do not know their shapes at the beginning of the lesson and seem to not fully understand towards the end I will pair them will someone who does understand and I can see is getting the concept. I will pair a higher and lower student together to peer tutor and help each other out. For students who finish this activity early I will allow them to go back to their seats and color their pattern block turkey. I will pair myself with the lowest student in the class, this will ensure that he understands the information and is not disrupting his classmates around him.

Materials: List all materials needed to implement your lesson; e.g., selected reading(s), video, PowerPoint, etc.

Procedures: Include motivation techniques, grouping, instructional strategies (steps in the lesson), probing questions*,
and lesson closure. Refer to rubrics for specific items that should be included in every lesson plan. 1. Students will start out in their seats as I introduce the lesson. 2. Today we will be reviewing our shapes and even making other shapes with the shapes that we already know 3. I will start showing the shapes in the pattern block bags and ask students if they can name shapes that I am pulling out of the bag. Who can name this shape? 4. After naming the shapes to the students I will pass out the pattern block bags that I made up. Each student will get their own bag. 5. I am going to give everyone 3 minutes to play with their pattern blocks. After you get to play then I am going to start my lesson. That means that once I start you cannot play with the blocks anymore. Does everyone understand that I am letting you play so that you will not play when I am teaching? 6. Ok time is up. I need everyone to put their blocks on their desk and sit on their hands. Once everyone is sitting on their hands and looking up at me we can start. 7. I will pull up the smart board activity and begin working through it slide by slide. Each slide has shapes on it and a hexagon. 8. I will allow one student to come up and move the smaller shapes onto the hexagon to show that put together they make the same shape. 9. After each slide and once we have done the demonstration on the smart board I will ask each student to use their pattern blocks and make the same shape. How many trapezoids make a hexagon? 10. I will ask the same probing question for each set of shapes. 11. After going through every slide I will close out the smart board I will go get the pattern block templates. I will allow the students to make their own shapes and figures using the templates. 12. After a little time has passed I will show the students the pattern block turkey worksheet. 13. I will ask the students in a pair if they can make the turkey using their pattern blocks. 14. After each pair has made the turkey they will be allowed to color their turkey 15. When the students start getting done they will put the worksheet in their cubbie and return to their seats. Who can name this shape? How many trapezoids make a hexagon? (repeat for every shape)

Activity Analysis:
Activity 1: Using the smart board students were able to come up to the smart board and move smaller shapes on top of a hexagon. This activity supports the lesson objective to show and demonstrate what the students will be doing at their seats. Technology is used as a magnifier to show the entire class, on a large scale what they will be doing at their desk with their own pattern blocks.

Activity 2: This week the students are learning about thanksgiving, so they should be able to identify the turkey. This activity supports the learning objective because the students are using the pattern blocks to make a larger object and combing them to make other shapes. This activity uses no technology because it is done in partners and is hands on to show that they have grasped the information taught.
