Assignment

The document contains 4 paragraphs describing different heat transfer scenarios: 1) Cylinder fins increase heat transfer from a motor cycle engine cylinder. 2) Internal cooling channels increase heat transfer from gas turbine blades. 3) Heating and cooling times are calculated for curing an epoxy coating on an aluminum panel. 4) The cooling rate needed to maintain a flat plate at 27°C with high temperature air flowing over it is estimated.

1).The engine cylinder of a motor cycle constructed of 2024-T6 titanium alloy and is of height H=0.

15m and outside diameter D= 50mm. Under typical operating conditions the outer surface of the cylinder is at a temperature of 500K and is exposed to ambient air at 300K convection coefficient of 50W/m2 K. Annular fins of are integrally cast with the cylinder to increase heat transfer to the surroundings. Consider five such fins which are of thickness t=6mm, length L=20mm and equally spaced. What is the increase in heat transfer due to use of fins? 2). A major objective in advancing gas turbine engine technologies is to increase temperature limit associated with temperature of the gas turbine blades. The limit determines permissible turbine gas inlet temperature, which are strongly influences overall system performance. In addition to fabricating turbine blades from special, high temperature, high strength super alloys, it is common to use internal cooling by machining flow channel within the blades enrooting the air through the channels. We wish to increase the effect of such a engine by approximating the blades as rectangular solid in which rectangular channel are machined. The blade which has a thermal conductivity of k=25 W/m k is 6mm thick and each channel has a 2mm X 6mm rectangular cross section, with 4mm spacing between adjoining channels. 3). A 3mm thick panel of aluminium alloy (k=177W/m K, c=875.3 J/kg K, rho=2770 kg/m3)is finished on both sides with an epoxy coating that must be cured at or above Tc=150oC for at least 5min. the production line for curing operations involves two steps (1)heating in large oven with air at Ta,o=175oC and convective coefficient of h=40W /m2-K , and (2)cooling in a large chamber with air at Ta,c=25oC and convection coefficient of hc=10W/m2 K. The heating portion of the process conducted over a time interval t1, which exceeds the time t2 required to reach 150oC by 5min. the coating has an emissivity of =0.1 and the temperature of the oven and chamber walls are 175oC and 25oC, respectively. If the panel is placed in the oven at an initial temperature of 25oC and removed from the chamber to safe-to- touch temperature of 37oC what is the total elapsed time for the time step curing operation? 4). Air at a pressure of 6kN/m2 and a temperature of 300oC flows with a velocity of 10m/s over a flat plate 0.5m long. Estimate cooling rate per unit width of the plate needed to maintain it at a surface temperature of 27oC
