Circular Horns-Patterns - AE and GCE

The document discusses the performance characteristics of conical horns with different half-flare angles. A horn with a 14 degree half-flare angle provides excellent patterns with low sidelobes, an aperture efficiency of 0.9-0.82 when coupling to a plane wave, and 88-90% Gaussian coupling efficiency when coupling to a lens. A horn with a 27 degree half-flare angle provides good patterns for all dimensions tested, with an aperture efficiency of 0.78-0.62 when coupling to a plane wave and 88% Gaussian coupling efficiency when coupling to a lens.

A 2-3l circular horn with a flare angle of 27 deg. results in good pattern for all dimensions, an aperture efficiency of 0.78-0.62 (coupling to a plane wave is still good since this is a circular aperture and the max. phase error on the squareedges sees a zero E-field). The Gaussian coupling efficiency is 88% (coupling to a lens) since one can choose the location in the focal plane lens of the lens to compensate for the phase error on the aperture of the horn.
