Homework No3 2007

The document discusses evaluating the throughput and bandwidth efficiency of satellite communication links using TCP/IP under different conditions: 1) For a GEO satellite link with a 2.048 Mbps carrier and 1.5 Mbps flow rate, the fractional throughput is calculated assuming a 2048 byte MTU, 64KB window size, 20% overhead, and 0 processing delay. 2) The fractional throughput is recalculated for a 800km LEO satellite link, assuming a one-way propagation delay between 0.0025 and 0.0125 seconds. 3) For uncoded QPSK over an AWGN channel with Eb/N0 of 9.6 dB, the throughput is estimated for the GEO satellite link

1.

Throughput of TCP/IP

Consider a 2.048 Mbps E1 carrier over a GEO satellite link. Assume that the flow-controlled transmission rate is 1.5 Mbps, as discussed in class. Evaluate the fractional throughput given, BER = 0, MTU = 2048 bytes, W = 64 x 1024 bytes (65536 bytes). You may consider that the overhead is 20% and you may also consider that the processing delay = 0

2. LEO satellite Redo question 2.1 for the case of a LEO satellite at 800 km altitude In this case, you may consider that the one way propagation delay (I) is: 0.0025 < I 0.0125 seconds.

3. AWGN channel Consider uncoded QPSK in AWGN with Eb/N0 = 9.6 dB. Estimate the throughput for the case of problem 1.

4. Bandwidth efficiency Evaluate the overall bandwidth efficiency of the link in problem 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 (i.e., in terms of throughput in bps/Hz of signal bandwidth). Consider null-to-null bandwidth and rate coded QPSK.

5. PDU error rate What is the PDU error rate in problem 1? Consider a BER = BER = 10-5. Does it change much if the PDU is 8192 bytes?

6. Improvement with SRQ What is the improvement in the average BER in problem 5 given an SRQ with a maximum of 2 tries?
