Lesson: Math Written Numerals Game Grade Level First Time 30 minutes Common Core Standard:

N.ME.00.01 Count objects in sets up to 30.

Materials/Preparation:
Paper Number cards Pencil

Summary of Lesson:
This lesson/counting game helps students to recognize when written numbers are out of order. It would be best to use flashcards to do this lesson. Begin by organizing one set of cards so that all but one number is in order, an example could be 0, 1, 2, 6, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9. Your students should then tell you which number is out of order (6) and tell you the correct place for the out-of-order number (between 5 and 7). As students progress and master their counting skills, begin to put two or even three numbers out of the correct order. This helps students recognize incorrect number order and to place an out-of-place number in its correct position.

Directions:
1. This lesson builds off of previous lessons on numbers and number order and should not be used until the students have reviewed and successfully mastered such skills. 2. The written numerals game will help students recognize when numbers that are out of order. This will help students to identify, write, and order written numerals. 3. Depending on the level/s of the student/s this game can be played in a small group, large group, or individual setting.

Procedure:
1. To begin, organize one set of card so that all but one number is in order, for example: 0, 1, 3, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. 2. Then have a student tell you which number is out of order and where it should go. Example for this set: 3 is out of order and it should go between the 2 and 4.

3. As the students master the numbers, you can begin to place more numbers out or order and have the students identify what numbers are missing and where they should go.

Skills Strategies Implemented:

This lesson helps students recognize, identify, write, and order written numerals. This lesson will help students be able to recognize numbers zero through nine and also the ability to place the numbers in correct counting order.

Assessment:
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to recognize the written numbers zero through nine and should be able to place the written numbers in correct counting order.

Differentiation:
The number cards will be modified to work on the number skills that the students individually have to still work on. This can be modified to add more number (up to 30) or to subtract numbers if the student is having trouble with zero through nine. Each set of cards will be individualized to meet the needs of a specific student or a group of students that are at the same level.

Closure/Evaluation of Student Performance:

The end of the game will be closure. We will play until all students have finished filling up their game boards/recording sheets. I will take individual observations on what the student does well and what they struggle with. This will help to determine what the students understand and what the students still needs to work on.
