We have been evaluating Andover Continuum controllers that have been returned to the Repair department for service and have found that a significant percentage of bCX1, ACX Series, Infinet i2xxx and BACnet b3xxx controllers have had Infinet and MS/TP transceiver failures. These controllers are designed with internal surge protection and electrically resettable fuses, specifically to protect the transceivers from damage. However, we have found that the problem is that the protection circuitry on most of these failed units is not damaged, indicating that the onboard protection was not connected. At sites where we have investigated that these issues were occurring, we found that the Ground terminal on the power connector was not connected to an Earth ground. In many cases, the installation was relying on a mechanical connection to the cabinet that they were mounted in to provide this chassis ground. Although this ground is also connected to the controller mounting plate, the connection typically is not adequate due to painted surfaces, loose mechanical mounts or corrosion. The internal circuit protection for these controllers relies on an adequate connection to ground which can only be guaranteed if the Ground terminal on the power connection is physically connected to a true earth ground. Although the installation documentation currently specifies this connection be made, we will be reinforcing this practice with an additional label on the controllers. Be aware that product damage due to improper installation is not covered by product warranty.
