Homework #1 KL2103 Engineering Mechanics, Class 02

Due: Thursday, August 26, 2010

Force Systems

Semester I 2010/2011

Problem 1 A 1000 N force is resolved into components along AB and AC. If the magnitude of the component along AB is 700 N, determine the angle and the magnitude of the component along AC.

1000 N

45o

Problem 2 (a) Calculate the moment of the 90-N force about point O for the condition = 15o. (b) Determine the value of for which the moment about O is zero. (c) Determine the value of for which the moment about O is maximum.

Problem 3 Determine the magnitude of the force F applied to the handle which will make the resultant of the three forces pass through O.

Problem 4 Replace the three forces acting on the bent pipe by a single equivalent force R. Determine the magnitude of R, the distance from point O where the line of action of R passes x-axis, and the angle between the x-axis and the line of action.

Problem 5 In an attempt to free a car from the parking spot as shown, three students exert forces on the car at points A, B, and C, while each rear wheel provides 40 lb forward thrust. (a) Determine the equivalent force-couple system at the car center of mass G. (b) If the force system is replaced by a single equivalent force, locate the position x where its line of action intersects the x-axis.
