Identify topic- must be complex and abstract compared to other models, they wont have specific characteristics Specify Learning Objectivesthere are two types of learning objectives, one can be met during one lesson and the other takes time (developing problem-solving abilities and becoming self-learners Identify problems- most effective if clear, concrete, and personalized, students must have enough prior knowledge to solve the problem Access materials-students must have access to materials to solve the problem
Phase 1:Review and Present problem- teacher reviews knowledge needed to solve the problem, then gives a specific, concrete problem to solve Phase 2:Devise a strategystudents devise a strategy to solve the problem and the teacher gives feedback Phase 3: Implementing the strategy-students implement their strategies while teacher monitors and may give back some feedback Phase 4: Discuss and evaluate results- the teacher guides a discussion of the students strategies and the results they find
Alternate testing is important with this model and allows the teacher to grade process outcomes Performance assessments, systematic observations, checklists, and ratings are also additional ways assessment can be done to grade the processes
Authentic task- require understanding that can be used outside of the classroom which motivates students because they will use it somewhere else Involvement and autonomy- motivation increases when students have a choice, when they are able to choose their own routes such as problems to choose, hypotheses to generate and how to investigate and report
This allows students to be independent in their learning and shapes the foundation for problem solving and the skills that go along with it.
