Novel Advanced: Figurative Language

Tuck Everlasting

Personification: gives human characteristics to non-human objects.
Symbolism: when an object is meant to be representative of something or an idea greater than
the object itself.
Activity 1:
Read each of the following quotes from the novel Tuck Everlasting. Identify which type of
figurative language is being used and then explain the meaning of the figurative language.
1. The wood was at the center, the hub of the wheel. All wheels must have a hub. A Ferris
wheel has one, as the sun is the hub of the wheeling calendar. (p. 4)
