Math Lesson 8 - 7

The document provides examples of using the distributive property to multiply binomial expressions. Specifically, it shows: 1) Multiplying (r - 6)(r + 4) using both the vertical and horizontal distribution methods. 2) Using FOIL (First, Outer, Inner, Last) to multiply binomial expressions like (x - 9)(x - 2) and (3a - 5)(5a - 2). 3) Writing the surface area formula for a box by distributing terms in the area expressions for the base and sides. 4) Distributing terms in two more binomial expressions: (2y - 3)(y^2 + 5y - 1) and (2p

Lesson 8-7

Example 1
Method 1

The Distributive Property

Vertical Multiply by r. r6 () r + 4 4r 24 r 2 - 6r r(r 6) = r 2 - 6r Add like terms. r6 () r + 4 4r 24 r 2 - 6r r2- 2r 24

Find (r 6)(r + 4).

Multiply by 4. r6 () r + 4 4r 24

4(r 6) = 4r 24

Method 2 Horizontal (r 6)(r + 4) = r(r + 4) + -6(r + 4) = r(r) + r(4) + -6(r) + -6(4) = r 2 + 4r 6r 24 = r 2 - 2r 24

FOIL Method

Find each product. a. (x 9)(x 2) F O I L (x 9)(x 2) = (x)(x) + (x)(-2) + (-9)(x) + (-9)(-2) = x 2 2x 9x + 18 = x 2 11x + 18 b. (3a 5)(5a 2) F O I L (3a 5)(5a 2) = (3a)(5a) + (3a)(-2) + (-5)(5a) + (-5)(-2) = 15a 2 6a 25a + 10 = 15a 2 31a + 10 FOIL method Multiply. Combine like terms. FOIL method Multiply. Combine like terms.

Example 3 FOIL Method GEOMETRY The surface area of a box is found by finding
the area of each of the six sides. Write an expression for the surface area of the box. Identify the area of each side. Area of bottom = area of top = (x + 3)(x + 3) Area each side = (x + 3)(2x 5) Now write the formula.
Surface Area equals two times area of base plus four times area of a side.
