Formal Writing Rubric Writing Traits
Ideas the content, the theme, and message
Is the topic small and manageable? Does the piece stay focused on an idea? Is the topic written about in a unique way? Are the details specific, relevant to the topic, and interesting? Can someone easily explain what the piece is about?

Organization the structure of the writing
Does the piece have a strong beginning (introduction) and give the reader clues about what is coming? Are the details connected to the topic and in the right place? Do the most important parts contain the most elaboration? Does the piece end (conclusion) smoothly and naturally and tie all of the ideas together?
Feedback:
Voice the personal tone that brings the writing to life
Does the reader feel that the writer of this piece is talking directly to him or her? Does the writer show an exceptional interest in the topic and a clear and convincing point of view? Is the piece written with confidence and sincerity? Can the reader tell who wrote the piece?
Feedback:
Word Choice the vocabulary used to convey meaning
Is the word choice specific and descriptive? Are specific words carefully chosen to create a vivid picture in the readers mind? Has the writer avoided repeating any one word too many times?
Feedback:
Sentence Fluency flow and rhythm of the writing
Are sentences varied in length? Do sentences start out with different beginnings? Are transition words used in a way that helps the piece flow? Is it easy to read this piece aloud? When read aloud, does the piece have a good flow and rhythm?

Conventions correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar
Is spelling correct? Have correct capitals been used? Are paragraphs indented? Are periods, commas, question marks, exclamation points, apostrophes, and quotation marks in the correct places?
Feedback:
Presentation the overall look of the writing
Is writing neat and readable; or if typed, are font style and size readable? Do spacing and margins help the reader? Are visuals such as illustrations, graphs, or diagrams related to the piece, and do the visuals help the reader understand the message better? Are the 8th grade writing requirements followed?
