How To Install Wordpress On Your Own Server

Setting Up A Hosting Service

To setup a self hosting wordpress blog the

first thing you need to do is choose and set
up a web host. When choosing a web host
make sure you choose one which has
wordpress support integrated, this will make
it much simpler and can be done with just a
few clicks of the mouse.

Choosing The Best Hosting Service

I use BlueHost for all my websites and have

been using them for many years with very
few problems, any problems I have had,
have been sorted out very quickly, All the
staff I have encountered at Bluehost have
been very friendly and helpful. If you are not
currently signed up with a hosting company
check them out as it is a very good service
and it will make it much easier to follow
along, as this is the service I currently use,
but if you already have a hosting account
else where you will probably have some
experience and will be able to adapt the
information easily. Also there is many other
choices out there that you may already be
familiar with.

When you sign up for your BlueHost account you will be asked to choose a domain name, make sure you
choose something that will be relevant to what your blog is going to be about, alternatively just use your
name. You can change the domain name on your blog at anytime at just the cost of the domain which is
usually no more than $10.

Wordpress How To - Installing wordpress onto your server

Now that you have setup your BlueHost account or an alternative you can install your first wordpress blog.

Most good hosting companies use the Cpanel software which is considered the best hosting software, so
even know I will be using Bluehost for the screen shots, if you are with a different hosting company it
should look similar. Once you log into your Cpanel it should look like the above screen shot. If this is the
first time you have seen a Cpanel it can look a bit scary at first, but don't worry I will walk you through each
step needed to setup your first wordpress blog and anything else that is needed.

Depending on which hosting service you signed up with will depend on weather they use Simple Scripts or
Fantastico, some will have both options.

Fantastico is a commercial script library that automates the installation of web applications such as
Wordpress to a website. Fantastico scripts are executed from the administration area of your web hosts
cPanel.

Simple Scripts is a one-click installation and upgrade utility for the web's most popular applications such
as Wordpress, but also many other web based applications and is also executed from the administration
area of your web hosts Cpanel.

For those of you that have both options choose Simple Script, as it is much faster and more reliable. I will
only be covering Simple Script in this report for installing your Wordpress blog as Bluehost no longer
support insulations of Wordpress via Fantastico. If Fantastico is your only option your hosting company
should have a video showing you how to do this.

Wordpress How To - Installing Wordpress Using Simple Script

First scroll down to the cPanel Software / Services panel, and click on the Simple Script icon, which you
can see in the red circle in the screen shot below:

Once you have clicked on the Simple Script icon your screen will look like this.

As you can see there is lots of different types of web based application which can be installed via Simple
Scripts, but we are only interested in the Wordpress application which you can see under the heading
Blogs. Click on ‘Wordpress’ which is circled in red above and your screen should now look like this.

What you will now see is a screen telling you about Wordpress, the licensing information and the currant
version of Wordpress. At the bottom of the page you will see a green button with ‘Install Now’ on it, click
on it now.

Your screen will now be showing the screen shot below. At the top of the page in ‘Step 1’ the first drop
down menu is the version of Wordpress which you are going to install, you should always choose the latest
version which will be set to automatically. When you set up your Bluehost account or other hosting account
you would have chose a domain name. This will show up in the drop down menu under 'Where would you
like Wordpress installed' Below you will see that the domain name that I will be using to install this
example is 'wordpresshowto.biz' also once you have more than one domain on your server you can
choose the one you want to install onto from the drop down menu. If you only have the one domain name it
will appear automatically. You now need to decide weather you are going to install your Wordpress blog in
the root directory or next level directory. the root directory is the domain name you chose when you set up
your hosting account. Or you can choose a directory name to install your Wordpress blog onto which will
become part of the URL name. For the purpose of this example I will be installing my blog on a directory
called blog.

This will make my Wordpress How To Blogs URL http://www.wordpresshowto.biz/blog

You need to make sure that if you want to set up your blog in the root directory ( for example http://
www.wordpresshowto.biz ) you need to leave the box next to your domain name blank. As you can see
above I have entered blog, as this is where I want to set up my blog. You can enter any appropriate name
for your blog or even just blog as I have done.

Under 'Advanced Options' in ‘Step 2’ you have the option to give your blog a name I have chosen
'Wordpress How To' for this example. Also Under 'Advanced Options' make sure you click on both of the
boxes to tick them as I have done in the above screen shot. Once you have read all the 'Legal Information'
in ‘Step 3’ tick the boxes by click on then and the click on the green box 'Complete' Once simple Scripts
finishes installing your blog the completed page will appear.

You have now successfully installed your first wordpress blog. This page will tell you your website URL,
your admin URL and your user name and password. You will also receive an e-mail telling you the same
details. Your password should be changed once you have logged into wp-admin and I recommend you do
so the first time you login.

Well Done! you now have a working blog. To find out lots more about Wordpress and how you can improve
your blog check out my blog at wordpresshowto.biz
