Friction Force
Friction Force
Friction is the force that opposes motion. It is the result of the electromagnetic attraction between charged particles in two touching surfaces. You see friction in everyday life. For example, when you are driving down the street and you brake. The brake grips the wheel and causes the wheel to stop. Friction is happening in this scenario because the wheel is moving when the brake is applied. We know that friction is the force that opposes motion. The brake is causing friction because it is opposing motion of the wheel. Friction can occur in the three different forms of matter. It can occur as a solid, a gas, and a liquid. A solid state of matter is when the molecules are close together and vibrate as a unit. When you have friction in a solid it is a sliding motion. With the other two states of matter it is a little bit different. For example, with a gas state of matter the friction that you get is a colliding force not a sliding one. A gas state of matter can be described in many ways. The particles of a gas are separated and have no arrangement that is repetitive. The particles can flow easily and take the shape of its container. Friction in a liquid state of matter can be described as fluid friction. The same thing goes with gases. In a liquid state of matter the particles are close together and have no arrangement. In fluid friction the faster you move the more friction you have. In solid friction the slower you go the more friction you have. This all ties into chemistry because chemistry is the study of matter and the changes that take place with that matter. Friction is the changes that occur with that matter and the different changes it
goes through. Chemistry and friction correlate with each other. In our model we will show the friction that occurs between two different solids. We will demonstrate how friction force varies between different materials. We will discuss to them how friction opposes motion and wants it to stop. We will do this in our model with the rocks. When you pull one rock the rock moves easily on a smooth surface and there is not a lot of friction. Then when you pull the other rock it will move slowly because of the sandpaper. The sandpaper will cause a lot more friction because of its properties.
