For the last flight we would like to explore airplane dynamics. Specifically, we will explore phugoid, short period and spiral divergence. We'll also determine the stall speed. Phugoid With constant angle of attack and after applying the Laplace transform, the equations for longitudinal dynamics becomes:
(2 + 2CD )u + CL
o

2 = 0 2C Ltrim u
m and m is the mass of the airplane. The two equations can be solved Sc finding the determinant

The solution for the frequency and damping of the phugoid mode is thus:

Short Period

Spiral Divergence
Spiral divergence is a mode that cannot be easily approximated from the full system of equations. The mode is the tendency for the airplane to roll and descend in a downward spiral.
Roll mode
The roll mode describes the response to a roll command. The roll rate must damp quickly (3 sec is specified by MIL-F-8785). A decent approximation is to neglect all L p non-roll terms, such that I xx p p = 0.
Dutch Roll
Dutch Roll is a coupling between roll and yaw. Various approximations exist. One approximation is:

In your groups, discuss what data you might wish to collect for each of these modes. (Suggestion: bring a stopwatch!)
