1. Distributive Property- distribute to the numbers in the parentheses ( )
5(16) = 5(16) = 80
50 + 30 = 80
Associative Property of Add/Multiply- move parentheses so its easier to solve
7 + (13 + x) = 7 + (13 + x) = 38
(7 + 13) + x = 20 + 18 = 38
Commutative Property of Add/Multiply- able to move numbers around
x + 4 = 4 + x
2. To solve 4(7x 3) + 2x, start by using the Distributive Property of Multiplication
and distribute the 7.
4(7x 3) + 2x 28x 12 + 2x
4 7x 4 3
Now you must combine like terms.
(28x + 2x) -12 = 30x 12
4(7x 3) + 2x = 30x 12
3. When solving the equation 7x 10 9x = -13, begin by combining like terms.
7x 10 9x = -13
-2x 10 = -13
Next, add 10 to each side.
-2x 10 = -13
+ 10 + 10
-2x = -3
Now divide both sides by -2.
-2x = -3
-2 -2 = 1.5
And there is your answer: x = 1.5

4. To solve 5x + x 1 = 11 begin by finding the Lowest Common Denominator,

5x + 2x 3 = 11
Next, combine like terms.
5x + 2x 3 = 11

Now, its just a one step equation. Add 3 to each side eliminate the 3.
7x 3 = 11
+ 3 + 3
7x = 14
And divide by 7 to isolate the variable.
7x = 14
7 7 = 2
x = 2


5. To solve and graph 2 < x begin by isolating the variable. Multiply each side by 5.

6. When solving -4x + 4 > -8 you want to begin by isolating the variable. Here you
would first get rid of 4.

Now divide by -4.

7. When graphing inequalities on a number a closed circle means that the number
its on is a part of the number set (< or >) and an open circle means that the number
is not a part of the solution set (< or >).
8. Chris wants to buy a bicycle that costs $160. If she saves $12 each week, what is
the fewest number of weeks she must save in order to buy the bicycle?

12w > 160
12 12 = 13.333.
$12 13 weeks = $156 (not enough)
at least 14 weeks
