Observation Form No.7: Problem Solving

The document discusses problem solving in education. It notes that problem solving is fundamental to education as it helps students learn to apply knowledge to new situations. The teacher's objective is to teach students the problem solving process and then allow them to practice solving problems independently to learn at their own pace. By giving more complex problems for students to solve after demonstrating the process, the teacher can assess how well students understood the lesson without providing the total solution. This encourages self-study and critical thinking skills.

Observation Form No.7 Problem Solving

One of the major goals of education is to help students learn in ways that enable them to use what they have learned to solve problems in new situations. In short, problem solving is fundamental to education because educators are interested in improving students' ability to solve problems. Problem solving is the process of working through details of a problem to reach a solution. Problem solving may include mathematical or systematic operation and can be a gauge of an individuals critical thinking skills. The teachers objective in problem solving is to let the learners learn at their own pace. The teacher taught the process how to solve the problem and later they let the student answer the problem. It helps the students to be motivated in class. It avoids the laziness in the learners, because as a student they really need to know the process or else they will fail to solve the problem or fail to follow the next lesson. The students objective that is apparent is to supplement their study. I n our subject Practical Electricity when our topic is on Ohms Law, I observe that after the teacher taught the process or solution in a particular problem, then the teacher gives students an exercise with a more complex problem. So I asked the teacher how to solve it, because many students are asking us how to solve that problem because the teacher doesnt teach that totally. The teacher replied just let them answer the problem, from there I learned that the teacher is just measuring how much the student understood the lesson.

The teacher motivates the learner by giving incentives to the one who can answer the problem. It can be in the form of tokens, exemptions in quizzes, grade for their recitation, and additional grade for major exams. The assignments that were given to the students are just the same with their exercise. The teacher let the students answer the problem at home, because most of them didnt answer it correctly. It can help because the students can brainstorm on how to solve this problem but on the other hand, some students can just easily copy the answer of their classmate that makes them lazy. The ability to solve problems is seen as a measure of spatial-logical cognitive ability. This means that if students successfully learn how to solve problems, they will have learned how to think well.
