Introduction to the Library

Welcome to Cambridge University Library, the main library of the University and one of the great research libraries of the world. The Library holds around eight million items spread across over 200 miles of shelving and the collection is growing all the time. This guide has been prepared to help you on your first visit.

Catalogues

Newton, the Librarys online catalogue, allows searches by author, title, keyword, ISBN or classmark. Once you have found the record for the item you are looking for, take a note of the classmark (the unique number given to each book) and the location. This will either be on the open shelves (which you go to yourself ), or the item will need to be requested from one of our eight reading rooms. Each reading room has its own unique request form. Requests for material fetched to the main Reading Room or West Room can be made using Newton prior to visiting the Library. Newton will also tell you if an item is on loan. If it is, you can place a recall for it. Newton holds records for all material received since 1978 and earlier items that were considered to be of academic importance at their time of receipt. Other pre-1978 items (for example, novels) are recorded in the Supplementary Catalogues, located in the Reading Room Corridor South. In addition the Anderson Room (Music), East Asian Reading Room, Manuscripts Reading Room, Map Room, Rare Books Room and Commonwealth Room have separate catalogues for certain categories of material.

Electronic and Digital Resources

The Librarys Digital Resources Area (DRA) is equipped with 56 computers which require a DRA login (separate from any other University login). DRA login application forms are available from the DRA office, the Entrance Hall, the West Room and online, (www.lib.cam.ac.uk/draform.php). At busy times it may take up to four hours to process an application. DRA computers provide access to the internet (including nearly 400 databases and over 30,000 electronic journals to which the Library subscribes), and Microsoft Access, Excel, Powerpoint and Word. Current staff and students of the University can access electronic resources away from the Library by using a RAVEN password, issued by the Computing Service. Laptops You can use your own laptop in most parts of the Library. Laptops should be silent; please turn off all start-up and shut-down noises before you visit. Wireless There are wireless hotspots in the West Room, Commonwealth Room, Rare Books Reading Room, Manuscripts Reading Room, Anderson Room, South Wing and the Tea Room. University members use their RAVEN password to connect; all other users can apply for a visitors password from the DRA or the Reading Room.

Photocopying and Scanning

Self-service photocopiers are located at the end of the North Wing Corridor, in the West Room and Commonwealth Room (for material restricted to those rooms). A DRA account is required to operate the self service photocopiers. A full range of reprographic services is provided by the Imaging Services Department (www.lib.cam.ac.uk/deptserv/imagingservices)

Borrowing

Cambridge University academic staff, postgraduates and undergraduates from their third year have borrowing rights. All books are issued from the Entrance Hall desk.

Handle with care

The Librarys books are valuable and often irreplaceable. Damage to them means that the information contained in them may be lost to future readers. Please use bookmarks rather than folding a page corner, using a paper clip/sticky notes or leaving a book face down.

Security

Large bags, coats and laptop cases are not permitted in the Library. Please use the Locker Room (lockers operate with a returnable 1 coin). Clear Library carrier bags can be bought from the Entrance Hall. Please look after your valuables dont leave laptops or personal items unattended.

Still feeling lost?

You can visit the General Enquiries Helpdesk at the top of the entrance stairs or ask any member of staff for further help. We also run a range of Induction and Research Skills courses. Please go to www.lib.cam.ac.uk/ Courses for further details.
