Babli (or Bhabli) Project: Dispute Between AP and Maharastra
Location: 10 Km away from the border of Andra Pradesh, In Dharmabad , Nanded district I. Constructed by Maharashtra across the river Godavari, disputed by Andhra Pradesh II. Telangana is a semi drought prone zone of Andhra Pradesh and AP needs to develop culturable land and irrigation facilities in this region. The Chief ministers of both the states AP and Maharashtra agreed upon certain mechanism of water utilization of Godavari River ( It irrigates large track of land in South India and so called Dakshin Ganga) in 1975 and later that agreement became part of the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal (GWDT) . III. As per the agreement Maharashtra could utilize 60 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet or billion cubic feet) of Godavari water while Andhra Pradesh could go ahead with building the Sriram Sagar Project (SRSP) and utilize all the balance water. IV. Contention of AP: Maharashtra has already built 4 projects upstream and now building and now through Bubli Project, Maharashtra was erecting crest gates on Godavari. As it has utilized water of its part(60 tmcf ), making the new project in Babli with other small projects upstream violets the agreement and it further cause grave scarcity of water in Telangana region which may turn barren. AP has approached SC and issue is going on. For this Chandra Babu Naidu went to Babli Project Site to protest and later he was dropped in AP by Maharashtra Administration.
