PDaniel Bernoulli PDF

Daniel Bernoulli was a Swiss mathematician born in 1700 who made major contributions to hydrodynamics. He studied many fields including mathematics, physics, and medicine. Bernoulli is best known for his work on hydrodynamics and the kinetic theory of gases. He showed that as fluid velocity increases, pressure decreases, known as Bernoulli's principle, which is the basis for aircraft wing design and other engineering applications. Bernoulli's Hydrodynamica was the first book on fluid mechanics. He won several prizes for his work in fields including astronomy, gravity, and ocean currents.

Daniel Bernoulli

(He is best known for his work on hydrodynamics) Daniel Bernoulli, Dutch-born Swiss mathematician, was born on 29 January 1700 in Grningen, Netherlands. He was the son of Johann Bernoulli and the nephew of Jakob Bernoulli, both of whom made major contributions to the early development of calculus. Bernoulli studied mathematics, physics, mechanics, astronomy, philosophy, logic, biology, and medicine at the universities of Heidelberg, Strasbourg, and Basel, where he received an MD degree in 1721. Daniel Bernoulli is best known for his work on hydrodynamics but he also did pioneering work on the kinetic theory of gases, pointing out that pressure would increase with increasing temperature. Bernoulli showed that as the velocity of a fluid increases, the pressure decreases, this came to known as the Bernoulli principle. Bernoullis principle is the basis for many engineering applications, such as aircraft-wing design. The air flowing over the upper curved surface of an aircraft wing moves faster than the air beneath the wing, so that the pressure underneath is greater than that on the top of the wing, causing lift. Bernoullis Hydrodynamica is regarded as the first book on fluid mechanics. Between 1725 and 1749 Bernoulli won 10 prizes from the Paris Academy of Sciences for work on astronomy, gravity, tides, magnetism, ocean currents, and the behaviour of ships at sea. He also made substantial contributions in probability. Bernoulli also worked on problems of calculus, probability, mechanics, and vibration of strings. Another important aspect of Bernoullis work that proved important in the development of mathematical physics was his acceptance of many of Newtons theories and his use of these together with the tolls coming from the more powerful calculus of Leibniz. Bernoulli died on 17 March 1782 in Basel, Switzerland.
