Year 9 Core Music-Programme Music

Nigel Westlake is an Australian composer and musician born in 1958 in Perth. He studied music from an early age with his clarinetist father. Westlake left school at 17 to become a freelance musician, then later studied film music. His composition "Antarctica" was originally written in 1991 as a score for an IMAX film about the continent, meant for guitar and orchestra, but the director used cello instead to suit the Antarctic imagery.

Programme Music
Excerpts from Antarctica – Suite for Guitar and Orchestra by Nigel
Westlake

Nigel Westlake is an Australian composer, performer and conductor.

He was born on the 6th of September, 1958 in Perth. His father,
Donald Westlake, a clarinettist for the SSO educated him in music at
an early age.
Westlake left school at the age 17, in 1975, to become a freelance
musician (clarinettist) in Australia and worldwide. Later in 1982 he
attended the Australian Film and Television School to study film
music and went to Holland in 1983 to study composition and the
clarinet.

Antarctica was released in 1991 by IMAX, directed by John Weiley. It

was a 40 minute film about the history and ecology of Antarctica,
with an original score written by Nigel Westlake. Antarctica was
filmed over 3 years, covering 20000km of the continent during
filming. The music was originally meant to be played with a solo
guitar and an orchestra, but Weiley did not think a guitar conveyed
the image of Antarctica well. Instead, the music in the film uses a
cello.
