Lab 7: Digital Logic

Fall 2009

The purpose of this lab is to introduce you to the basic use of logic gates and how to use the bread board to display inputs and outputs of digital logic circuits. You also get the opportunity to analyze digital logic circuits in Multisim. When using Multisim, it is suggested that you use a Probe (Place -> Component -> Group -> Indicators -> PROBE_BLUE) to confirm your output and a Single Pole Double Throw Switch (Place -> Component -> Group -> Select All Groups -> Switch -> SPDT) to control your inputs. The NAND gates are under the TTL group (Place -> Component -> Group -> TTL -> 7400N). In the lab, you are to configure the circuits below and make the indicated observations so that you can confirm the truth tables that you observed in your circuits modeled with Boolean Algebra and in Multisim. For each circuit, you will be using the 7400 IC (integrated circuit), Quad NAND gate chip. The pin-out diagram is provided on the last page and should be followed to set up the requested circuits. For each circuit it is expected that you use the switches at the bottom of the bread board to control your inputs and the on-board LEDs to confirm your outputs. Record your results in the provided truth tables that you will develop and compare to your results that you received in Multisim.

Pinout:

Before coming to lab, fill in the tables above for the Multisim and Boolean Algebra columns, and generate the Multisim graphics outlined below. Lab #7 is to be turned in as a single hardcopy submission, and it should include screen shots of the circuits that you made in Multisim and the truth tables that you filled out in lab and determined using in Boolean Algebra and Multisim.
