Quartile
Quartile are those values of the which divide the total frequency into four parts .The quartiles are denoted by symbol Q .Thus Q1 would be denoted first quartile,Q2 second quartile,Q3third quartile .

Uses of Quartile

In Economics & Business statistics quartile are more widely used than Deciles & Percentiles. They are measures of dispersion .

COMPUTATION OF QUARTILES

1. 2. 3.

The procedure for computing quartiles. For individual observation. For discretes series For continous series

FOR INDIVIDUAL & DISCRETE SERIES

Q 1 = Size of N + 1/ 4 th item Q2 = Size of 2(N +1) /4 th item Q3 = Size of 3(N + 1) /4 th item

Calculate quartile in individual series

Steps to calculate quartile in individual& Discrete series

Calculate N , Here N = 5 Apply formula N + 1 / 4 in case of Q1 = 6/4 = 1.5 In case of Q2 =2 (N+1)/4=3 In case of Q3= 3(N+1)/4=4.5

FOR CONTINUOUS SERIES

Q1 = N/ 4 Q2 =2 * N / 4 Q3 = 3 * N /4

ILLUSTRATION CALCULATE Q1 & Q2,Q3 FROM THE FOLLOWING TABLE?

SOLUTION
N = 1OO Q1 = Size of N / 4 th item = 100 /4=25 Q2 = Size of 2*N/4 th item = 2* 100/4 = 50 Q3 = Size of 3*N/4 th item = 3*N/4 = 3 * 100/4 = 75

Calculation of Q1

Q1 = L+ (N/4) C.f /f * I L=5,N/4=25,C.f =7,f=18 ,i=5 Q1 = 5 + 25- 17/18 * 5 =10

Calculation of Q2

Q2 = L + 2(n/4) - c.f/f * I L=10,2(n/4)=50,c.f=25,f=25,i=5 =10 + 50 25 /25 * 5 =15

Calculation of Q3

Q3 = L + N/4 - C.f f /f * I Here L= 15, 3(N/4) = 75, C.f = 50, f = 30 ,I = 5 = 15 + 75-50 / 30 *5 15 + 4.17 19.17
