Purpose of Activation
Cogents licensed software and software components include activation technology to help prevent unauthorized use. Activation validates that a product is not installed on more computers than is allowed and allows our valued customers to use Cogent software fully and legally. Activation of Cogent software can now be done easily and quickly over the Internet. Without having to contact technical support, you can activate licenses, review licensing details, and deactivate licenses (so that licenses can be transferred to a different computer).
Note: License activation does not collect, transmit, or use any personally identifiable information.

System Requirements
To use the Cogent License Management Utility, the computer must meet the following requirements:
Windows XP or 2000 operating system
To use the Software Activation Center, the computer must meet the following requirements:
Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher An Internet connection
Note: Licenses can still be activated and deactivated if the computer does not have Internet access; contact Cogents Help Desk to obtain the necessary codes.
Chapter 2 Accessing/Logging In
The Cogent License Management Utility and the Software Activation Center work together to allow you to easily manage the licenses of all of your Cogent software. To get started, you will open both programs, as described in this chapter.
Chapter 2 - Accessing/Logging In
You are now ready to begin using the Cogent License Management Utility.
To log onto the Software Activation Center, follow these steps: 1 2 Open Internet Explorer. Type in the following address in the Address field:

Press Enter or click Go. The Software Activation Center Login page will be displayed, an example of which is shown in Figure 2-2.

Enter your username in the Username field. Enter your password in the Password field.
Note: If you do not remember your password, click Forgot password? and the page shown in Figure 2-3 will be displayed. Type in your username and type in the primary email address that is associated with your account. (For security purposes, you must use the same email address). Click Send password and your password will be sent via email. If you do not remember your username, contact Cogents Help Desk.
Chapter 2 - Accessing/Logging In
Click Login. The Software Activation Center will be opened with the Orders page displayed. An example is shown in Figure 2-4.
You are now ready to begin using the Software Activation Center.

Using the Cogent License Management Utility Activation Center, you can do the following: and the Software
Activate a license, as described in Chapter 3, Activating a License on page 7. Deactivate a license, as described in Chapter 4, Deactivating a License on page 17. Transfer a license to another computer, as described in Chapter 5, Transferring a License on page 25.
In addition to the above, you can also use the Software Activation Center to view orders, manage account information, and change your password. Refer to Chapter 6, Using the Software Activation Center on page 37 for details.

3. The Software Activation Center Web site will validate the entered information and will then automatically generate an Activation code. You will enter that Activation code back into the Cogent License Management Utility to complete the activation.

Note: The Cogent License Management Utility will also run automatically when you open a licensed product that has not yet been activated. If this occurs, go to step 5 on page 9 and continue to follow the instructions.
Access the Cogent License Management Utility, as described in Accessing the Cogent License Management Utility on page 3. The Welcome page will be displayed, an example of which is shown in Figure 3-1.
Activating a License
Select the Activate a license or check the status of a license button and click Next. The Activate License or Check License Status page will be displayed, an example of which is shown in Figure 3-2.
For the product that you want to activate, click on its row. It will be highlighted.
Note: You must select a license that is currently not activated to continue.

Click Activate or Check Status. A separate product window (the title bar will display the products name) will be displayed. An example of this window is shown in Figure 3-3.
The product window displays information that you will process through the Software Activation Center.
Note: If your computer does not have Internet access, skip steps 6 through 13 and instead contact Cogents Help Desk to obtain the necessary Activation Code. Once you have the code, go to step 14 on page 14 and continue following the instructions.
If you have not already accessed the Software Activation Center, do so now (as described in Logging Onto the Software Activation Center on page 4). The Orders page of the Software Activation Center will be displayed, an example of which is shown in Figure 3-4. The page lists the Cogent product orders associated with your account.

In the list, locate the desired product (which is the same product that you have opened in the Cogent License Management Utility). Next to the appropriate product, click . License fields for the selected product will be displayed beneath the list of orders, an example of which is shown in Figure 3-5.

10 Click the plus symbol (+). The following blank fields will be displayed: Site Code, Machine ID, and Notes. An example is shown in Figure 36.
11 Returning to the product window in the Cogent License Management Utility, copy the text from the Site code field and then paste it (or type it) into the Site Code field on the Software Activation Center. 12 Returning to the product window in the Cogent License Management Utility, copy the text from the MID field and then paste it (or type it) into the Machine ID field on the Software Activation Center.
Figure 3-7 shows an example of the Software Activation Center with steps 11 and 12 completed.

13 On the Software Activation Center, click Add New License. The row will be updated with the values you entered, and the system-generated Activation Code will be displayed in the Activation Code column. An example is shown in Figure 3-8.

14 Copy the Activation Code from the Software Activation Center (or otherwise provided to you by Cogent) and paste or type it into the Activation code field on the product window of the Cogent License Management Utility. (The field is located underneath the Unlock application radio button.) An example is shown in Figure 3-9.
15 Click Continue on the product window of the Cogent License Management Utility. The product window will close and the Activate License or Check License Status page will be redisplayed, showing an updated Activated? field for the product you just activated. An example is shown in Figure 3-10.

16 Repeat steps 3 through 15 for every product that you want to activate. 17 When you are finished, click Next on the Cogent License Management Utility to complete the process. The Finish page will be displayed, an example of which is shown in Figure 3-11.
18 The activation is now complete. You can exit one or both programs as described in Chapter 7, Exiting/Logging Out on page 45.

To deactivate a license, follow these steps: 1 Access the Cogent License Management Utility, as described in Accessing the Cogent License Management Utility on page 3. The Welcome page will be displayed, an example of which is shown in Figure 4-1.

Select the Deactivate a license (for transferring purposes) button and click Next. The Deactivate License page will be displayed, an example of which is shown in Figure 4-2.
For the product that you want to deactivate, click on its row. It will be highlighted.
Deactivating a License
Click Deactivate License. A confirmation window will be displayed, an example of which is shown in Figure 4-3. From this point forward, the process cannot be reversed, so make sure that you want to deactivate the license. Click No to halt the process; click Yes to continue.
An information window will be displayed, an example of which is shown in Figure 4-4. Write down the Removal Code.
Click OK to continue. The Deactivate License page will be redisplayed, and the columns for the product you just deactivated will now display a Removal Code. An example is shown in Figure 4-5.

Note: If your computer does not have Internet access, contact Cogents Help Desk to process the Removal Code. Skip steps 7 through 14 and go to step 15 on page 23 to finish the process.

11 Next to the license that you want to deactivate, click the minus symbol (-). A blank Removal Code field will be displayed, an example of which is shown in Figure 4-8.

12 Type in the Removal code (obtained from the Cogent License Management Utility in step 6) into the Removal Code field on the Software Activation Center. An example is shown in Figure 4-9.
13 Click Deactivate License. The license will be deactivated. The license will no longer display and the status message ( x o f x x l i c e n s e s c u r r e n t l y a c t i v a t e d f o r t h i s o r d e r) will be updated. An example is shown in Figure 4-10.

14 Repeat steps 3 through 13 for every product that you want to deactivate. 15 When you are finished, click Next on the Cogent License Management Utility to complete the process. The Finish page will be displayed, an example of which is shown in Figure 4-11.

Task 3: Process Codes for New Computer and Old Computer in the Software Activation Center
Note: If your computer does not have Internet access, skip this Task 3 and contact Cogents Help Desk to obtain the necessary Activation Code. Once you have the code, go to Task 4: Activate New Computer on page 34 and continue to follow the instructions.

If you have not already accessed the Software Activation Center, do so now (as described in Logging Onto the Software Activation Center on page 4). The Orders page of the Software Activation Center will be displayed, an example of which is shown in Figure 5-10. The page lists the Cogent product orders associated with your account.

Click the double-arrow symbol , located at the end of the row. The following blank fields will be displayed: Site Code, Machine ID, Removal Code, and Notes. An example is shown in Figure 5-12.

For the new computer: Returning to the product window in the Cogent License Management Utility, copy the text from the Site code field and then paste it (or type it) into the Site Code field on the Software Activation Center. For the new computer: Returning to the product window in the Cogent License Management Utility, copy the text from the MID field and then paste it (or type it) into the Machine ID field on the Software Activation Center. For the old computer: Type in the Removal code that you wrote down (obtained from the Cogent License Management Utility in Task 1: Obtain a Removal Code from the Old Computer ) into the Removal Code field on the Software Activation Center. Figure 5-13 shows steps 3-5 through 3-7 completed.

Note: Depending on your security settings in Internet Explorer, you may see a P o p - u p b l o c k e d message just below the address bar. Click on the message and then click Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site from the drop-down menu. An example of this process is shown in Figure 6-3.
After clicking the menu option, a confirmation window will be displayed; click Yes. The Send Email pop-up window will be displayed.
An example of the Send Email pop-up window is shown in Figure 6-4. The fields populated with the license information are not editable. The To field contains the primary email address associated with your account. If desired, you can edit the email address and you can send the information to an additional email address, by typing it into the CC field.

Click Send email. A confirmation window will be displayed; click OK. When the email has been sent, an E m a i l s u c c e s s f u l ly s e n t status message will be displayed. Click Close to close the pop-up window. The Orders page will be redisplayed. A sample email message is shown in Figure 6-5.

You can view the demographic information, change the demographic information, and change your password. Instructions for changing demographic information and changing the password are in the following sections.

When you are finished making changes, click Update. An A c c o u n t i n f o r m a t i o n u pd a t e d status message will be displayed.
Note: To discard any changes and revert to the data that was last saved, click Restore.
Note: Passwords must be at least 6 characters and no more than 9 characters. You can use any combination of letters or numbers, and passwords are not case-sensitive.
Type in the new password again in the Confirm New Password field.
Click Change to complete the changing of your password. A P a s s w o r d s u c c e s s f u l l y c h a n g e d status message will be displayed.

The menu bar on the top of the Software Activation Center allows you to access the pages in the program, to access this Guide, and to log out. An example of the menu bar is shown in Figure A-2.

The Orders page lists all of the orders associated with your account and lists all of the licenses associated with each order. The processes for activating, deactivating, and transferring licenses all occur on this page. To access the Orders page, click Orders from the menu bar. The following sections describe the fields and buttons that display on the Orders page. The specific elements that are displayed on the page will differ depending on what function you are running. In many cases, the system will be able to process the update without the code. However, in some cases (due to regular system operations and clean-up), the Removal Code may not be able to be recovered. Contact your License Administrator if you encounter this problem.

Yes (with a check mark) indicates that the products license is activated. Unknown (with no check mark) indicates that the products license is deactivated. Demo (with no check mark) indicates that the products license is not activated because it is a demo.
