Tutorial CH 3

This document contains 6 problems related to statistical measurement theory. Problem 1 asks to calculate the standard deviation, mean, median and mode of 10 length measurements. Problem 2 involves calculating properties of a continuous probability distribution function. Problem 3 asks how many measurements would fall within certain ranges of the mean, given the mean, standard deviation and assumed normal distribution. Problems 4-6 involve calculating probabilities and confidence intervals given sample means, standard deviations, sizes and confidence levels.

ENT286 Instrumentation and Measurements Tutorial (Statistical Measurement Theory) 1) A certain length measurement is made with the following results:

Reading x (cm)

1 49.3

2 50.1

3 49.0

4 49.2

5 49.3

6 50.5

7 49.9

8 49.2

9 49.7

10 50.2

Calculate the standard deviation, mean, median, and mode of the values of the data.

2)

Consider the following probability distribution function for a continuous random variable:

f ( x)

3x 2 35 0

2 x3
elsewhere

a) Show that this function satisfies the requirements of a probability distribution function. b) Calculate the expected (mean) value of x. c) Calculate the variance and the standard deviation of x.

3)

A certain length measurement is performed 100 times. The mean value is 6.832 m, and the standard deviation is 1 cm. Assuming a normal distribution for the error in the measurement, how many readings fall within a) 0.5 cm, b) 2 cm, c) 5 cm, and d) 0.1 cm of the mean value?

4)

In the mass production of a certain piece of a machine, the average length is 10.500 in. and the standard deviation is 0.005 in. Calculate the probabilities for the following cases: a) The length of the piece is less than 10.520. b) The length of the piece is between 10.485 and 10.515.

To determine the confidence interval on the mean weight of filled buttercups, 40 samples are measured and found to have a mean value of 8 oz and a standard deviation of 0.2 oz. Determine the confidence interval on the mean weight of buttercups with confidence levels of 90%, 95%, and 99%.

6)

In problem 5, if the sample size was 20 with the same statistics, determine the confidence intervals on the mean of the weight of buttercups for the given confidence levels.
