IB Chemistry Objectives - Kinetics

This document outlines IB Chemistry objectives related to reaction kinetics. It covers defining the rate of reaction, experimental procedures for measuring rates, analyzing rate data, the collision theory and factors that affect reaction rates such as temperature, concentration, and catalysts. It also addresses distinguishing overall reaction order from individual reactant orders, deriving rate laws from experimental data, and explaining that reactions can occur in multiple steps with the slowest determining the overall rate.

IB Chemistry Objectives Kinetic 6.

1 Rates of Reactions
6.1.1 Define rate of reaction 6.1.2 Describe suitable experimental procedure for measuring reaction rates 6.1.3 Analyze data from a rate experiment. Student should be familiar with graphs of change in concentration, volume and mass vs time

6.2 The Collision Theory

6.2.1 Describe and explain the kinetic theory in terms of movement of particles 6.2.2 Define activation energy. 6.2.3 Describe the collision theory and what 3 factors a reaction rate depend upon 6.2.4 Predict and explain, using the collision theory, the qualitative effect of particle size, temperature , concentration and a catalyst on the rate of a reaction 6.2.5 State and explain Maxwell- Boltzmann energy distribution curve for a fixed amount of gas at different temperature and its consequence for change in the reaction rate. 6.2.6 Describe the effect of a catalyst on a reaction 6.2.7 Sketch and explain a reaction pathway and a Maxwell-Boltzmann graph for a reaction with and without a catalyst

16. Rate Expressions

16.1.1 Distinguish between the terms rate constant, overall order of a reaction, order of reactant 16.1.2 Deduce a rate expression ( law) from experimental data. 16.1.3 Solve problems involving rate expressions 16.2.1 Explain that a reaction can occur in more than 1 step and that the slowest step determines the rate of the reaction.
