Classroom Behaviors and Routines Packet

Mr. Ackermans 4th Grade Class 2013-2014

STUDENT SIGNALS
The students have been practicing, as a part of their behavior goals, our Call to attention signals. They know that these are used when the teacher wants to get the attention of the students in order to tell them something important or give directions. The students are expected to respond to the signal, and then immediately turn off their voices, stop their bodies, and put their eyes on the teacher. If the entire class is able to do this immediately, they will get a tally mark toward a popcorn party. Anything except for whole class listening is not given a tally. Use your discretion Students may pressure misbehaving students to be good.

SIGNAL Whoop Whoop!

CALL RESPONSE Put your hand in the air Students reply with and shout Whoop Whoop Whoop! Whoop! like you are at a pop concert! The teacher claps a The students respond short, rhythmic pattern with the same pattern.

Clap, Clap, ClapClap-Clap

Bell Ring, 5-1

The teacher rings the bell and counts down 5-4-3-2-1.

EXPECTATIONS After response, students immediately stop, look, and listen to the teacher. There should be zero voices and nobody is moving around the room. After response, students immediately stop, look, and listen to the teacher. There should be zero voices and nobody is moving around the room. Students have until 1 to find their seats, end their conversation, and turn their eyes to the teacher. . There should be zero voices and nobody is moving around the room.

STUDENT REWARDS
The students have 3 reward systems that we use in class. Each is meant to reward students for their good behavior, in either a full school setting, a classroom setting, or on an individual basis. We are always looking to reinforce the most positive behaviors in our classroom, as opposed to focusing on correcting and punishing the negative behaviors.

REWARD SYSTEM Class Dojo Points

HOW TO USE IT Normally we use an iPad and the Class Dojo App. I will include a blank table for you to keep track of Dojo Points for the day, and I will add them in when I return. Whenever the class, as a whole, reaches the level 3 on a behavior (We did it!), they are given a tally on the main whiteboard. This only works when the class, as a whole, is doing the behaviors. Do not reward students with a tally when a few students are misbehaving. These blue cards are a part of our PBIS system. Every time we catch one of our students being Respectful, Responsible, Safe, or Caring, we write them an Outstanding Otter card. They may keep them on their desks and turn them into the yellow ? box at the end of the day.

PRIZES Students will cash in their dojo points for various prizes and privileges tomorrow. At 30 tallies, the class will earn a popcorn party during the afternoon.

Teamwork Tallies

Outstanding Otter Cards

Every Friday, 1 student per classroom gets their card drawn and they can go to the office for a prize.

If you have your own prize system, or would like to ignore one of these for the day, feel free. We have a great deal of difficult behaviors in this class, and we are doing what we can to build in tools that will support our changing behaviors to positive ones.

MORNING ROUTINE
This is what our daily morning routine will look like. Students have an expectation to enter quietly and begin working right away. Now is not a time for chatting, but rather taking care of business and getting ready for the day. NUMBER WHAT THE STUDENT IS DOING 1 2 Enter the classroom at a level 0 voice, and find your desk. Students will sharpen pencils, use the bathroom, get a drink, turn in homework, and then work on their math worksheet found in the front of the room. Students continue working while the teacher stamps signed planners. Students that have morning jobs need to quietly complete the jobs. News, Weather, and Calendar will present their work at 9:20.

Students throw away all food and put away math work for later, then show that they are ready.

If students want to turn in their reading logs for the morning, just tell them that Mr. Ackerman will check them tomorrow!

ACTION 100 ROUTINE

Students are expected to read for 2 steps (30 minutes) at school every day during a set time frame. Our Action 100 reading time is from 2:30-3:10 every day. During this time we are able to conference with students to better understand how they progressing in reading. Jamie Berry, our reading specialist, may come in at this time to give a short lesson or to help with conferencing. Students must try to read for 30 minutes straight, with no breaks! We normally play some classical music from off of Pandora at this time as well. STUDENT Get out a good-fit book and get started reading right away! Keep your eyes on the text! Keep your feet on the floor and bottoms in the seats! Read for the entire Action 100 time, unless stopped by a teacher. There are NO BREAKS during reading time! Voice level must be at 0, with no unnecessary noises! TEACHER Conference with students to help them understand their levels Read quietly to themselves

END OF SCHOOL ROUTINE

The end of the day is a challenge for this class. They must not only remember to take home their 100 Book Bags, but we also have planners to fill out, jobs to complete, a room to clean, and students to quietly line up. Our end of day starts at 3:10. Our bussing students are to be excused at 3:32, while walkers and pickuppers can stay and wait in line to be walked down to the main level by the teacher. NUMBER WHAT THE STUDENT IS DOING 1 Keep a voice level 0 and get out your planners Fill out the planner as a class WHAT THE TEACHER IS DOING WHAT IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE Remind students of expectations Students quietly find their homework folders and planners Use the Planner Template, or a Students quietly fill out space on the board, and write planners and wait to be down any homework for the excused night Excusing students that have Students file out one by one filled out planners and are into the hallway to get their ready to go stuff, then re-enter the classroom in order to be excused for the day. Bussers excused at 3:32, everyone else lines up and walks down with the teacher.

HALLWAY EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to follow the posted school rules of line basics when walking in the hallway. If these basics are not followed, the students will be sent to the end of the line and will need to wait with the teacher and review expectations before entering the classroom again. When using the bathroom, sinks, or lockers, basic hallway courtesy is expected. It may be helpful to form two lines (boy/girl) for faster transport. HALLWAY EXPECTATION Level Zero Voice Line basics Stay to the right LOOKS LIKE Mouth closed Hands to side, face forward, single file lines, no touching the walls. Stick to the right side of the hall and stairs SOUNDS LIKE No sounds All tapping, banging, and stomping is prohibited. No bumping into other lines

MINOR/MAJOR SYSTEM
We do our best to model and use positive reinforcement strategies in our classroom, but sometimes we simply have to lay down the law and write up our students for misbehaving. We use slips called minor and major slips to organize these. We also have access to a special team called the PAWS team that can be called by phone to come up to the room and pull out misbehaving students for a break and refocusing. MINOR BEHAVIORS 3 or more warnings about any of the following: o Blurting in class o No Line Basics o Out of Seat without permission o Hands in desk/horseplay o Work Avoidance Minors are written automatically for: o Throwing Items o Lying o Non-Violent Aggression o Disrespect to teachers or others o Bathroom shenanigans o Loud disruptions in the hallway o Leaving class without permission o Any other behaviors as deemed worthy by the teacher Minor slips are to be taken down to the office at the end of the day for record keeping. 3 minor slips become 1 major slip in the office and an automatic lunch detention for the next day. MAJOR BEHAVIORS MAJOR behaviors typically also require a call to the PAWS team to remove the student. o The PAWS team can be contacted by calling Mary Lou in the office at 83700 Major behaviors are: o Violent Aggression o Complete disrespect for teachers o Damage to property o Cheating o Stealing o Forging Signatures o Running/Major horseplay in the classroom o Harmful Words/Swearing/Racism o Any kind of harassment/bullying o Weapons o Threats o Defiance of teacher

EMERGENCY SITUATIONS
In the event of a Fire Drill or other evacuation, the Emergency Response Guide is located in the bin on the wall above the sink. Please take that sheet, along with the red/green ANDREW ACKERMAN page out with you along with the students. Students will need to line up in two side-by-side lines in order to efficiently make their out of the building through Door 11 (to your right and down the stairs). Do a head count once outside and confirm that all students are accounted for. If they are, hold up the GREEN side of the page; if not, hold up the RED and wait for assistance. For all other situations, follow the guideline listed on the Emergency Response Guide.

OTHER / NICE TO KNOW

We have paper passers! Student jobs are posted along the back wall each week. We also have specific students that will sweep the floor, collect garbage, and keep our sink clean. There are 31 students in this class, so double checking that everyone is seated and working is crucial. The students will push the limits when it comes to what they think they can get away with, so be firm while trying to stay positive. The students love earning Dojo Points and Tallies during class, so use those if the class is being especially energetic or defiant. Remember to praise and uplift those that are doing desired behaviors! The students will require some kind of brain break during our Reading and Math blocks. If you have your own stretch/physical movement breaks, feel free to use them or refer to our Brain Break list.

BATHROOM/HALLWAY SIGN OUT

Students will request to use the facilities A LOT. Below is a list of situations and how to troubleshoot them: SITUATION I need to use the bathroom! WHAT TO DO Is it an emergency? Wait 5 minutes and ask me again. Did you go at our last scheduled break? o Why not? If it is a true emergency, see right. Is this a good time to ask me that? Wait 5 minutes and ask me again Did you take a drink at our last break? o Why not? You may use the classroom fountain What exactly is wrong? What do you think the nurse will do to help? Is this a good time to be asking this? What will you do to make up your lost work time? If it is during morning work time, right after recess, or any other time that is not direct teaching, they may. Otherwise they will need to wait. HOW TO DO IT Student must sign out on Bathroom Sign-Out Sheet Student must take a hall pass 1 boy, 1 girl out at a time. Always use the in-class fountain unless we have a break or are returning from Specials/Lunch Students must sign out and take a pass when going to the nurse. Use the bathroom passes and sign out sheet. Do not send for ouchies Go quickly to the locker, get what they need, come right back.

Im thirsty; I need a drink; I want to fill my water bottle.

My hand/head/tummy/foot hurts. Can I go to the nurse?

My ________ is in my locker. Can I go get it?

It is worth noting that we have both Band-Aids and a water fountain in the classroom for students to use. They should not need to use the facilities often because we have scheduled break times. We excuse students one-by-one (to avoid misbehavior) to the facilities at:

- Before 9:15

- 11:00

- 12:45

- 2:25

They should at the very least try to go at this time, in order to reduce the chances of needing to go later on.
